Will Higher Tax Rates Balance the Budget?
Students, get a full week of this at a summer seminar: lrnlbty.co As the US debt and deficit grows, some politicians and economist have called for higher tax rates in order to balance the budget. The question becomes: when the government raises taxes, does it actually collect a larger portion of the US economy? Professor Antony Davies examines 50 years of economic data and finds that regardless of tax rates, the percentage of GDP that the government collects has remained relatively constant. In other words, no matter how high government sets tax rates, the government gets about the same portion. According to Davies, if we're concerned about balancing the budget, we should worry less about raising tax revenue and more about growing the economy. The recipe for growth? Lower tax rates and a simplified tax code.

Mayor Bloomberg Presents Fiscal Year 2013 Executive Budget - Blue Room, City Hall, Downtown Manhattan - May 3rd, 2012 Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today presented a Fiscal Year (FY) 2013 Executive Budget and an updated four-year financial plan. The Mayor outlined a plan that achieves a balanced budget -- without tax increases -- which is made possible by the City's years of prudent planning, spending restraint and an increasingly diversified city economy. The Executive Budget reduces year-over-year controllable City expenditures, but expenses that are not fully controlled by the City continue to rise and continue to make less funding available for City services. The Executive Budget relies on $6.2 billion in savings for FY 2013 generated though 11 rounds of deficit closing actions taken by City agencies since 2007.

Sessions To Obama Budget Chief: Will You Resign If Your Statement Is Proven False?
WASHINGTON, February 14—At a Budget Committee hearing today, OMB Acting Director Jeffrey Zients refused, under direct questioning from Sen. Sessions, to answer whether the president's budget would increase spending over current-law levels. The White House has repeatedly claimed that their budget contains $2.50 in spending cuts for every $1 in tax increases. In truth, the budget plan submitted by the president would increase spending by $1.5 trillion over the next 10 years relative to current projections. Over that time, the federal government will spend a total of $47 trillion, up from $45.5 trillion projected under the already enacted Budget Control Act—producing by the president's own projections an additional $11.2 trillion in gross debt.
