Budapest is the capital and the largest city of Hungary and the seventh largest in the European Union. It is the country's principal political, cultural, commercial, industrial, and transportation centre, sometimes described as the primate city of Hungary. According to 2011 Census, Budapest had 1.74 million inhabitants, down from its 1989 peak of 2.1 million[5] due to suburbanization. Budapest was the focal point of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, the Hungarian Soviet Republic of 1919, Operation Panzerfaust in 1944, the Battle of Budapest of 1945, and the Revolution of 1956. Cited as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, its extensive World Heritage Site includes the banks of the Danube, the Buda Castle Quarter, Andrássy Avenue, Heroes' Square and the Millennium Underground Railway, the second oldest in the world. Other highlights include a total of 80 geothermal springs, the world's largest thermal water cave system and third largest Parliament building. Budapest March 2012
A very relaxed weekend in Budapest for Nat's Birthday. We stayed in Buda Castle Hotel (Buda side). I was really surprised with how quiet the city was - but in a good way...nice chilled out vibe. Really nice food and wine at very good prices. The buildings and architecture were amazing - especially those around the City Park. We also went to the Szenchenyi Baths which were ok...the interior was good with proper thermal baths...but was generally a bit out-dated. It was about 20 degrees Celsius during the day.

On my last day in Budapest, February 19, 2012 I was going to have a few hours until my mid-day train would take me back to Austria. I decided to visit the Dohany Street Synagogue, Budapest's largest and most historic synagogue. This magnificent building was opened in 1859 and is capable of holding more than 3000 worshippers. I also visited the Jewish Museum and admired an exhibition by Israeli graphic artist Dan Reisinger. Behind the synagogue I visited the Raoul Wallenberg Holocaust Memorial Park and in the adjoining building I attended a multi-media exhibition that showcase 150 years of history of Budapest's Jewish Quarter.
