The scene is Brighton, with holidaymakers awaiting the arrival of Kolley Kibber, who is working on a stunt for his newspaper. A gang, led by Pinkie Brown, recognize Kibber as the man indirectly responsible for the death of a former gang leader. Kibber, recognizing the vicious young Pinkie, fears his life is in danger. He is right: his body is later washed ashore. Spicer, one of the gang, ensures an alibi by leaving Kibber's cards at various places. But he gets an attack of nerves, and Pinkie arranges for a rival gang to eliminate him.

Brighton Uncut take direct action against Top Shop owner Philip Green's serial tax avoidance. Sir Philip Green avoided £285m in UK income tax by paying his wife a £1.2billion dividend in 2005 and is now employed as the Governments "efficiency" adviser. 8 protesters superglued themselves inside Topshops main windows and 40-50 more held a banner and gave leaflets outside. The police moved quickly to displace the protest to a "designated protest area" in a side street. This resulted in a tiny kettle of protesters who were systematically arrested or made to give their personal details. Over 20 arrests were made mostly for Section 14 offenses and aggravated trespass. Amid growing public anger over the cuts, protests over tax avoidance by big business and wealthy individuals have hit high streets up and down the country.

A Mike Williamson own goal handed Championship side Brighton a place in the FA Cup fifth round at the expense of Premier League Newcastle. Will Buckley's 76th-minute shot struck the defender and looped over the helpless Tim Krul. Newcastle wasted good chances, Leon Best twice firing just off target when well placed and having another shot saved by Peter Brezovan. Yohann Cabaye had a shot charged down as Newcastle sought a late equaliser. With Newcastle's Senegal strikers Demba Ba and Papiss Demba Cisse due to make early returns from the Africa Cup of Nations, Best and Shola Ameobi were keen to make an impression up front. Best almost made a perfect start when he found space on the edge of the box and his low drive flew narrowly wide. He wasted an even better chance in the 12th minute when Ameobi picked out Best, who headed over from six yards. The best opportunity of the first half fell to full-back Danny Simpson.
