The Dark Side of Rio - Brazil 2010
January 2010 Eight miles of walls are being constructed around hundreds of Rio de Janeiros sprawling slums. Are they really eco-barriers, protecting the rainforest, or a disguise for the citys social problems? Here in Brazil, a wall does not signify separation or division, a wall does not cause problems for the community, says the Police Captain. Yet the residents of the slums, known as favelas, tell a different story. Most only agreed to the wall after the government offered them better services and a hospital. All believe that the walls are intended to contain the slums in time for Rio to host the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics. Even the police officers confirm their value as an instrument of control: The Wall helps, really helps us, they say, nervously patrolling the two entrances and exits to the Dona Marta slum. Rios 750 slums have become notorious for drug trafficking, police killings and a Brazilian reality little seen by the tourists on the beaches. Yet the residents believe that barriers like this will only deepen centuries of social divide. Across Rio, the biggest favela district of Mare, is still in the grip of a deadly gang war. The truth is that this wall is going only to cause more war, says Damian, a third commando of a dangerous drugs gang, more police will die, traffickers will die and the killing will continue.

Brazil Holiday Destination
Brazil is the largest country in Latin America. It spreads across almost half of South America, and occupies a total area of 8,5 mio km2. It is the fifth largest country in the world. Except for a small number of islands, Brazil is a single and continuous landmass. The Equator crosses through the Northern region, near Macapa, and the Tropic of Capricorn cuts through the South of the country, near São Paulo. The official language is Portuguese; the accent and the intonation, however, are very different from what one hears in Portugal and other former Portuguese colonies. Some people say that Brazilians speak "Brazilian". The mixture of races has made Brazil a culturally rich and at the same time unique country.Video brought to you by Travelindex Network and Travel & Tourism Foundation. Rags To Riches - Brazil
Is Brazil's booming economy starting to overheat? To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com While the world has been transfixed by the astonishing economic growth in China and India, just out of the spotlight Brazil has been busily turning a once moribund economy into a juggernaut. Not so long ago you could watch the inflation rate tick higher by the hour in Brazil, unemployment grew just as quickly and the nation was in the grip of a military dictatorship. Despite all this, Brazilians have remained optimistic. With momentum building, tens of millions are being winched out of poverty and into relative prosperity, and within a few years it's estimated the nation's middle class will number 150 million."It's the Brazilian moment! We've always said we're going to be the country of the future...I think we're there", says Eduardo Paes, the Mayor of Rio. The economic rise has been fast and frenetic, but the economy is a bullet train and much of the country still runs on the old single gauge; many are worried that it is struggling to keep up with itself. "There are 16 million people still living under the poverty line with less than they need to have a daily meal", says Father Fernandes. Nevertheless, many Brazilians believe the World Cup and the Olympics will be coming-of-age celebrations."We always find something to celebrate. That's why this country is so special: it's full of passion". Can they avoid a throbbing hangover? A ...
Brazil overtakes UK as sixth-largest economy
Brazil has overtaken the UK as the world's sixth largest economy, according to a London-based research centre. The shift is part of a larger trend in which emerging economies are out doing some European countries. The south American country was still considered something of an economic underachiever a decade ago, but as its economy grew steadily in the past eight years, things started to change. Government's anti-poverty measures further helped in lifting more than 40 million people into a new middle class. Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo reports from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Brazilian Cannibals Arrested For Making Empanadas With Human Meat "Full Story" Crazy
Police in Brazil say three people arrested on suspicion of murdering at least two women have confessed to acts of cannibalism. The accused, a man and two women, allegedly said they belonged to a sect. Police said the suspects claimed "a voice" had told them to kill. Police found two female bodies buried in the grounds of the house where the suspects lived in the town of Garanhuns, in northeastern Pernambuco state. Speaking at a news conference, Garanhuns Police Commander Democrito de Oliveira said the three had told police they had eaten the flesh of their victims. He said the two bodies were identified as those of two women who had been reported missing in Garanhuns earlier this year. Mr Oliveira said police were investigating whether the suspects could be linked to the murder of another six women in Pernambuco. He said one of the female suspects had claimed to have used some of the flesh of her alleged victims for making pasties, which she allegedly sold in Garanhuns. Mr Oliveira said the three would be charged with murder, kidnapping, hiding bodies, fraud and offences against public health.

Brazil's Perspective on the Global Economy
After emerging from the 2008 financial crisis relatively unscathed, Brazil's inevitable entrance into the club of major global powers is increasingly accepted. Stewart M. Patrick, senior fellow and director of the International Institutions and Global Governance program at the Council on Foreign Relations, and Carlos Simonsen Leal of the Brazilian Getulio Vargas Foundation discuss Brazil's perspective on global finance and international security. Simonsen says: 1. "Every sensible Brazilian" is worried about the actions of the US Federal Reserve and European Central Bank. Brazil, having suffered through hyperinflation, believes their injection of liquidity into markets is "dangerous." 2. The exchange rates of the Chinese renminbi and the overvaluation of the real relative to the dollar are sources of concern for Brazil. "We are not protectionist at heart," argues Simonsen, "but if everyone is playing a game where they don't mind about liquidity and they want to devalue their currencies, we are not going to risk inflation." 3. Brazil is opening many new embassies and consulates. It is motivated not only by commercial diplomacy (cultivating broader markets for Brazilian exports), but also by a desire to have a benign influence on relations among countries. "After all, Brazil is a country that hasn't had a war in 150 years. Not many countries can say that." 4. Brazil is a strong supporter of democracy, and has many common interests with democracies. "We'd like to see ...

Brazil megadam washes residents away
With an estimated cost of at least $14 billion and a projected electrical capacity that would make it the third most powerful in the world, Brazil's Belo Monte Dam is leaving a large footprint - one that looks like it will stamp out local residents in the Amazon. Until recently, Belo Monte faced seemingly endless court cases and popular opposition, but in June, the Brazilian environmental agency IBAMA granted Norte Energia, the owner, a license to go ahead. That means an estimated 24000 people living in the dam's vicinity are going to be paid to leave. Elio Alves Da Silva, a fisherman who has lived in the community for 30 years, says he will take a $12000 buy out, despite not wanting to leave. Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo reports from the construction site.

On our Monday Hangover we'll talk about Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff being in town to discuss monetary policy and energy, amongst other things, but what specifically can Obama learn from the Brazilian leader? China recently surpassed the United States as Brazil's largest trading partner, forming an economic partnership that leaders from both Beijing and Brasilia like to boast about. But as low-cost Chinese products begin to flood the Brazilian market, some Brazilian fishing companies have complained that they cannot compete. Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo reports from Vigia, Brazil.
