Gulf Oil Spill: BP Execs Escape Punishment as Disaster Continues To Impact Sea life. 1 of 2

DemocracyNow.org - Two years since the worst offshore oil spill in US history, we look at its impact on the Gulf of Mexico's residents and wildlife even as no BP officials have faced criminal prosecution for the disaster. Eleven workers died when the Deepwater Horizon well exploded and almost five million barrels of crude oil leaked into the ocean before the well was plugged after 51 days. BP maintains the Gulf is rapidly recovering thanks to the company's efforts, but Al Jazeera reporter Dahr Jamail describes how scientists say shrimp, fish and crabs in the Gulf of Mexico have been deformed by oil and chemicals released during the spill clean-up effort. Meanwhile, ProPublica's environmental reporter Abrahm Lustgarten says the company failed to learn from past mistakes that could have helped avoid the explosion. He is the author of the new book, "Run to Failure: BP and the Making of the Deepwater Horizon Disaster." Is the $7.8 Billion BP Oil Spill Settlement a Bad Deal For Gulf Residents and Businesses?

democracynow.org - Investigative journalists Greg Palast and Antonia Juhasz examine who wins and who loses in BP's settlement. "[BP's] basically being told, like a bank robber -- you put the money back and everything will be forgiven," says Palast, who also investigated the Exxon Valdez settlement. Meanwhile, state and federal governments are still pursuing separate civil claims against BP for environmental damage. "That's when we're going to hopefully uncover those 72-million pages of investigation that will include wrong doing not just by BP, not just by Transocean, not just by Halliburton, but by every major oil company involved offshore, and very likely based on my research, wrongdoing by the Obama administration," says Juhasz. "It is a desire to keep that out of the public that has pushed the settlement process forward." We also speak with Florida State University Oceanography Professor Ian MacDonald about what it means to restore the Gulf of Mexico. In the wake of the oil spill, BP pledged up to $500 million over a decade to conduct independent scientific research on the environmental effects. But MacDonald notes that, "When the oil was gushing, there were literally hundreds of ships ... studying this disaster. Now as we try to learn what happened, and prepare ourselves for the next catastrophe, we have nothing like those kinds of resources present." BP OIL SPILL DISASTER: Mutated Sea Life - Shrimp Without Eyes, Crabs Without Claws,...?!

Eyeless shrimp, fish with oozing sores and other mutant creatures found in the Gulf of Mexico are raising concerns over lingering effects of the BP oil spill. On April 20, 2010, an explosion aboard the BP-leased Deepwater Horizon rig killed 11 people and spewed an estimated 4.9 million barrels into the Gulf, in the worst offshore oil spill in US history. Two years later, scientists and commercial fishers alike are finding shrimp, crab and fish that they believe have been deformed by the chemicals unleashed in the spill, according to an extensive report by Al Jazeera English. "At the height of the last white shrimp season, in September, one of our friends caught 400 pounds of these," Tracy Kuhns, a commercial fisher from Barataria, La., told Al Jazeera, showing a sample of the eyeless shrimp. 'Eyeless fish, and fish lacking even eye sockets, and fish with lesions, fish without covers over their gills....' - Darla Rooks, Louisiana fisher Darla Rooks, another lifelong fisher from Port Sulfur, La., told the broadcaster she was seeing "eyeless fish, and fish lacking even eye sockets, and fish with lesions, fish without covers over their gills and others with large pink masses hanging off their eyes and gills." Rooks added that she had never seen such deformities in Gulf waters in her life -- a refrain common to most fishers featured in the report -- and said her seafood catch last year was "ten percent what it normally is." A survey led by the University of South Florida after ...

BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico: One Year Later

Also available on our web site launchpad39a.com BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico One Year Later British Petroleum, more commonly known as BP, is a global oil and gas company headquartered in London, United Kingdom. It is the third-largest energy company and fourth-largest company in the world measured by revenues and one of the six oil and gas giants. On 20 April 2010, the semi-submersible exploratory offshore drilling rigm Deepwater Horizon, exploded after a blowout; it sank two days later, killing 11 people. This blowout in the Macondo Prospect field in the Gulf of Mexico resulted in a partially capped oil well one mile below the surface of the water. Experts estimate the gusher to be flowing at 35000 to 60000 barrels per day of oil. The exact flow rate was uncertain due to the difficulty of installing measurement devices at that depth and was a matter of ongoing debate. The resulting oil slick covered at least 2500 square miles, fluctuating from day to day depending on weather conditions. It threatened the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Texas, and Florida. The drilling rig, DeepWater Horizon, was owned and operated by Transocean Ltd on behalf of BP, which is the majority owner of the Macondo oil field. At the time of the explosion, there were 126 crew on board; seven were employees of BP and 79 of Transocean. The US Government has named BP the responsible party, and officials have committed to hold the company accountable for all clean-up costs and other ...

Will BP Oil Spill victims pay tax on settlement? Robert Wood

The news release that BP reached a $7.8 billion settlement over its Deepwater Horizon oil spill could mean cash for many victims soon. It's good news for BP too, although BP must still deal with probable government fines. See BP Spill Saga Far From Over. BP can deduct compensation paid to victims but may have a hard time deducting government fines.

The REAL REASON Behind the BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico - 2010

READ THIS: Dick Cheney's deregulation agenda is the real (underlying) reason / cause behind the US oil spill by British Petroleum (BP) in 2010 off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico. Deregulation coupled with lax government oversight (lackies appointed by Dick Cheney at the helm) lead to the omission of key safety features and protocols, a free pass for drilling licenses, emphasis on profit over safety, and absolutely NO PLAN for containment of blowouts. In addition, the courts in the Gulf States, are completely stacked with Republican appointees (like Feldman) with major investments in or connections with BIG OIL (see last paragraph). Must read: www.nytimes.com For example, George W Bush and Dick Cheney helped block a 2002/03 Bill that would have required the use of acoustic switches as a means to activate the blowout preventer (BOP). Also, BP did not want to lose an oil well (by activating the BOP); this would have cost them future profit in addition to the costs for exploration and preparation of the well. This is most evident when you look at attempts in the first month and a half: all of the post-blowout efforts have been focused on SAVING the well; it was only after more than a month before BP attempted "TOPKILL", which would have sealed the well. Lastly, US District Judge Martin Feldman, who overturned the temporary drilling ban on June 22, owns investments in Ocean Energy (Houston-based), Quicksilver Resources, Prospect Energy, Peabody Energy ...

There, he unveiled to the public his new protest song about the BP oil spill entitled "God's Counting on Me, God's Counting on You." Backing up Pete's singing and banjo picking is the singer/songwriter James Maddock on acoustic guitar. All proceeds of this concert went to the Gulf Restoration Network. The song was written by Lorre Wyatt and Pete Seeger. The show was produced and hosted by Richard Barone. The video was edited and mixed by Matthew Billy. The audio is a mixture of the microphones on stage and the camera microphone behind the audience. The stage microphones picked up the singing and banjo playing while the camera microphone picked up the audience singing along and clapping. Lyrics: When we look and we can see things are not what they should be God's counting on me, God's counting on you When we look and see things that should not be God's counting on me, God's counting on you Hopin' we'll all pull through, Hoping we'll all pull through, Hopin' we'll all pull through Me and you.
