AUSTRALIAN BOWER BIRD
Here is this beautiful Australian native male bird, building it's nest to attract the female of the species, (sorta like us humans). This bird was filmed in the 7d Hacking River Protected Environment Zone near Helensburgh/Otford in New South Wales. It is extremely rare to film the male satin bower bird building the nest. The area it is located in is in danger of being changed to allow development, industrial, residential, commercial, so this film may be the only time the world has a decent record of it's nest building abilities within this area.

A clever character: the bowerbird. It has to perform quite a few impressive tricks to be able to breed. To start with, the male will only win a female if he shows he can build a truly fantastic nest. Easier said than done because the female is very fussy. She is not easily satisfied. It starts with a few twigs, the foundation. The complete structure is built up around it. Twigs alone are not sufficient, a path must also be laid preferably with pretty stones. The males are more than willing to gather those stones. They love to collect blue straws and plastic that attracts their attention. There was a black mate nearby but it didn't want to be in the picture. Maybe next time. Unfortunately sights such as this are becoming a rarity around the town due to poor local cat and dog laws and pollution in the local creek areas all ruining the habitat from local wildlife. Its very frustrating to see this happening and the local council doing very little to combat this problem. Satin Bower Bird fixin' up his Bower
This bower bird is fairly young. You can tell this by the bower - its not particularly well made and he doesn't move my blue hair tie. Experienced bower birds move stuff they haven't put there themselves. He also has a lot of white things (like flowers) and not as many blue things. Satin Bower Birds will collect blue things to attract a mate. The female will fly in, seeing his blue stuff. When she lands on the runway, the bower bird does his dance. Most of the blue things are hidden from site when the female lands. The male then does his sexy dance and pulls out the items one by one showing off to her his collection. If she likes it, she'll mate with him. The bower is really just a hotel room, and shell fly off and lay her eggs and take care of them. THE BOWER IS NOT A NEST AND WILL NEVER HAVE EGGS IN IT! There is some competition between males. Some males will steal other males blue things. However, everyone knows who the thief is. The bird that had his stuff stolen, will fly to the culprit's bower and steal back only his own stuff and put it back exactly how it was. He'll then go back and wreck the intruders bower, I guess out of spite. (I hardly blame him) Bower birds are pretty particular where they put things. And if you move an experienced bower bird's things, hell move it back (even if its just flipped upside down, or moved a couple centimetres) If new things are added, he'll toss them out. Vogelkop bower bird is an endemic species in the bird's head peninsula of New Guinea island. Although the bird does not have beautiful plume or feather compared to birds of paradise, it has several unique characteristics. It can build an arch structure made of twigs and dry grass and decorate it to attract female bower birds.
