Mina Markovic (SLO) and Rustam Gelmanov (RUS) are the winners of the second event of the 2012 IFSC Bouldering World Cup. In the women, Mina confirms her huge talent, after her fantastic 2011 season, when she got the IFSC Lead World Cup (but she also won one event in the Bouldering World Cup in Munich). In Log Dragomer, she wins ahead of Shauna Coxsey (GBR) and Anna Stöhr (AUT). In the men, Rustam, bronze at the 2011 Arco World Championship, comes back to gold after three years (Wien 2009). Silver to Kilian Fischhuber (AUT) and bronze to Thomas Tauporn (GER).

Tour of Boulder Colorado
Boulder has been named the #1 city in the nation in Gallup's "Well Being Index". It is also the most educated city in the United States. Today, I'm going to take you on a tour of Boulder Colorado my hometown. Here is my view of why Boulder is such an attractive place to call home. The first thing that comes to mind is the lifestyle. Boulder is situated where the Rocky Mountains meet the great plains. The transition is dramatic and the geography in and around Boulder are an outdoor playground. Everywhere you look you will see people out biking, hiking, running or just enjoying the natural beauty. Contrary to popular opinion, we are blessed with a fantastic climate. We have four seasons but over 300 days of sunshine. When we do get snow it often melts within a day. You can find heavy snow cover and cold up in Colorado's high country but on the Front Range you can enjoy the outdoors every month of the year. Boulder is a haven for world class athletes, but you don't have to be an Olympian to take advantage of the thousands of acres of open space surrounding Boulder. Boulder's economy is strong and is sparked by the University of Colorado. CU is the city's largest employer but just as important is the innovation that has sparked a high tech and entrepreneurial boom. Boulder is known nationwide as one of the hotbeds for start-up companies. High tech, bio-tech, aerospace and renewable energy are just a few of the local industries that keep Boulder vital. Boulder WC 2010 report #1 - Greifensee
The Boulder World Cup 2010 will be a thrilling affair, at least for the boys! Current champion Kilian Fischhuber and wonder boy Adam Ondra tied at the finals in Switzerland's Greifensee with Kilian only winning because his better semi final performance. Bouldering contests are much more experience dependend than lead events. After floating through most of the qualification and the first semi final problems, Adam temporarily lost it (as you can see in the clip) and looked like, well, the seventeen year old boy that he actually is! In the finals though he gave Kilian a tough run for the money. Very impressevely Kilian dealt with the pressure of Adam flashing problem #3 and #4. It will be very interesting to observe this duell over the course of the season. As for the girls, Jacky Godoffe's less than inspired route setting in my opinion left a lot to be desired. For the future there is quite some room for improvement to get the girl problems up the standard of the boys. It was a close decission between current champion Akiyo Noguchi, Chloé Graftiaux and the final winner, Alex Johnson from the States. Shot with my "2010 toy guerrilla camera set", consisting of a Nikon D5000 and 2 Kodak Zx1. Of course the quality is solala, but the bag is cheap and light :-)
Boulder World Cup 2011 report - Vail
A great final round at the IFSC Bouldering World Cup of Vail assigned the victory to the Austrian team, with Fischhuber and Stöhr on the highest step of the podium. The atmosphere in Vail, in the framework of the well known Teva Mountain Games, was vibrant with excitement and expectation for what promised to be a perfect competition, and the cheers of the audience accompanied the athletes all the time, psyching them up. Kilian Fischhuber mastered the finals by flashing all boulders, while his Russian rival, Dmitry Sharafutdinov, made one attempt too much in sending all four problems. Third, with a bronze medal, the German Jonas Baumann, with two tops in 4 attempts. Anna Stöhr, in great shape, was the only woman to top all four boulders, while Alex Puccio (USA) and Melissa Le Neve sent only 3 in respectively 3 and 8 attempts. Kilian now is very close to the first ranked in the Boulder WC Ranking 2011, the Russian Sharafutdinov; Anna leads at a distance the women ranking, with Akiyo Noguchi (JPN) in second position.
Boulder World Cup 2012 report - Innsbruck
The Austrian iron couple, Anna Stöhr and Kilian Fischhuber, got a awesome victory in front of their crowd in Innsbruck. In an enthusiastic sold out Marketplatz, the podium was completed by Shauna Coxsey (GBR) and Melissa Le Neve (FRA), and, in the men, by Rustam Gelmanov (RUS) and Sean McColl (CAN). As a result of this success, Anna Stohr takes the lead (2 points on Noguchi) in the World Cup Ranking, while Rustam Gelmanov is solidly at the top of the men's, 100 points ahead of Fischhuber.

Girl Spills Yogurt on President Obama in Boulder, Colorado 4/25/2012
While walking a rope line in Boulder, Colorado outside a popular local restaurant, a woman accidentally spilt yogurt on President Obama. Obama took the incident in stride, quipping "Getting yogurt on the president, you've got a story to tell." The woman told Obama she was embarrassed. While greeting people outside, a young woman spilled yogurt on the president. It appeared to hit his pants. The president wiped himself off with a towel and made a wry comment about the Secret Service, but pooler couldn't hear his exact words. He did say to the woman, "Getting yogurt on the president, you've got a story to tell." She said, "I'm very embarrassed."

Boulder World Cup 2011 report - Munich
The IFSC Bouldering World Cup closed last Saturday with the event in Munich, Germany. The competition awarded the World Cup titles to the Austrians Anna Stöhr -- winner of the World Championship in Arco -- and to Kilian Fischhuber, although neither of them stepped up for the first place in Munich. In the women's field, the Slovenian Mina Markovic gains the gold medal with 3 tops 3 out of 4; the home athlete Juliane Wurm, galvanized by her public, sends one boulder more than Anna Stöhr and thus gets the silver medal, with Stohr in third place. The Russian Dmitry Sharafutdinov, World Champion in Arco, shows again his great shape with four boulders climbed on first attempt; but most impressive is the fact that only Russian athletes are on the podium at the last bouldering competition of the year: Rustam Gelmanov is second, and Alexey Rubtsov is third.

Boulder World Cup 2011 report - Canmore
The Japanese Tsukuru Hori and Akiyo Noguchi conquered the gold medals in the Male and Female categories, respectively with 2 and 4 problems completed in the Finals. In the Men's category, the Slovenian Klemen Becan continued his lucky series with the second place, while one boulder topped meant the third place for the home athlete Sean McColl. The Austrian Anna Stöhr ranked second behind Noguchi, both topped all 4 boulders but Anna took 1 more attempt. Jain Kim (KOR) took bronze, with 3 tops. Canmore was a unique event, 75mm of snow fell the night before the qualification and the athletes certainly relished the experience.

Boulder World Cup 2011 - Eindhoven
It's Kilian and Akiyo, once again. At the new outdoor venue - in the square designed by Massimiliano Fuksass - Kilian Fischhuber (AUT) beat Daniel Woods (USA) by 2 attempts to send all boulders in the final round, while the French François Kaiser steps in third place with 3 problems completed. In the women's field, Akiyo Noguchi, from Japan, claims back the first place by sending the four final boulders by the routesetter Jamie Cassidy in 6 attempts, against Anna Stöhr's 8 attempts. Melissa Le Neve (FRA) got the bronze medal with 3 tops out of 4. Fischhuber is now leading the World Cup Ranking 2011 with 409 points, while Dmitry Sharafutdinov follows at 366; despite Noguchi's victory, Stöhr is still at the top of the women's ranking for 2011 with 540 points, against Noguchi's 429.

Anna Stöhr and Glairon Mondet Guillaume were the undisputed winners of the second Boulder World Cup of 2011 that will be always remembered for its funky route setting, especially for the girls. The uncoated panels allowed for some truly remarkable problems that spanned from demanding rather old school but highly refined climbing skills to the most new school jumps. The problems only had one thing in common: they were all awkward! As chief route setter Percy Bishton put it: "A nightmare for the competitors, but hey, I'm not paid for being nice!" For the audience that was one of the best Boulder World Cups ever!

Boulder WC 2010 report #5 - Eindhoven
Excellent route setting for the boys and girls, flawless organization and super psyched and funny hosts Joost Hofman and Steven van Lummel made Eindhoven 2010 the emotional highlight of the boulder season so far. The world cup indeed is going to be a exciting affair - you never know whats going to happen when a climber steps onto the podium! While Alex Johnson, Chloé Graftiaux, Jain Kim and many of the previously strong boys got stuck in the semi finals (or earlier!), Kilian Fischhuber and Anna Stöhr apparently have identical looking twins that help them out when they can't do a problem. Honestly, their ability to not get too depressed by even the most disapointing falls and start the next problem with a positive attitude is in a class of its own! Kilian's third place secures him the lead in the overall ranking, a position that Anna also holds after her victory in Eindhoven. Everyone who witnessed all the events so far realizes how much harder it is to win the overall world cup than any single event!

Boulder World Cup 2011 report - Barcelona
Barcelona (ESP) - The heat of Barcelona seems to have shuffled the cards of the 2011 Boulder World Cup, as the favorites Kilian Fischhuber and Anna Stöhr (AUT) did not make it to the podium in the competition set by Reini Fichtinger. In the women's field, Akiyo Noguchi was the only one to complete all four problems, while the second ranked Alex Puccio just sent 2, although being very close the the top of the second boulder. Third the French Melissa Le Neve, with 2 tops in Finals and one top less than Puccio in the Semis. Guillame Glairon Mondet seized his victory and the gold medal by flashing the fourth problem. Behind him, two Russians, Rustam Gelmanov and Dmitry Sharafutdinov, the only one to make it on problem number four together with the French winner. Anna Stöhr and Kilian Fischhuber maintain the lead of the WC Ranking 2011, although their advantage on respectively Noguchi and Puccio has been reduced. Sheffield next week will give an hint of who could gain the World Cup 2011: after Sheffield, the Boulder World Cup will take a break until the last competition of the year, in Munich. Unfortunately this video is less attractive than some other clips too since there was no light on the wall. The footage of the GoPros and other small chip cameras was pretty much unusable. (it would have been very helpful if some of the responsible people had been to some of the previous BWCs to learn a thing or 2) The whole event was doomed when they decided to do it in this concrete ...

Last weekend in Sheffield the Austrian Kilian Fischhuber assured the World Cup 2011 with his 5th victory, which brought him to 560 points in the 2011 ranking - with his direct rival Sharafutdinov following at 430, and one competition left to close the Boulder World Cup 2011. Second on the podium Cedric Lachat (SUI), third the Russian Alexey Rubtsov, with respectively 5 and 13 attempts to complete 2 problems. Gold in the women's field was awarded to Akiyo Noguchi (JPN), at her 4th victory of the year; nevertheless, Anna Stöhr (6th in Sheffield) remains at the top of the 2011 ranking. Silver goes to the French Melissa Le Neve, and bronze to Alex Puccio (USA). The Boulder World Cup will be back with the final competition in Munich in August; but all the best climbers will gather in two weeks in Arco for the IFSC World Championship...
Boulder World Cup 2011 report - Vienna
Anna Stöhr won her second World Cup in a row in Vienna and is leading the women's ranking after the third event with quite a margin. With the boys, the situation is a bit more complicated since Kilian Fischhuber got stuck in the qualification round. After his second place in Slovenia, Dmitry Sharafutdinov was climbing really well again and rightfully won in Vienna. Barely a week after Slovenia, the Vienna event didn't quite match that event, the stage is really too low and the audience had a hard time to watch especially the lower parts of the problems. Route setting was most good (just a bit too hard at the boys finals) with some pretty bad problems thrown in, more on that after a closer analyses...
