This is not a film by Nick Elias. Just kidding. Kinda. This is a film I made for my final project in a Transgender Studies class at UCSC. The key idea behind this film is that how we structure arguments around the Nature/Nurture debate are often flawed because they use either/or reasoning rather than both/and. We label things like sex as either a social construct or as biology/science/"nature" when aspects of human life are actually not so dichotomous. Nature/Nurture are inextricably linked and cannot be seperated, it is both/and, not either/or. I also wanted to explore how language constricts and shapes bodies and gendered pronouns and such. I could not have made this film without the help of my roommates and friends. Palmer Mitchell, the film major, helped me out a lot with planning out scenes, shooting scenes, teaching me how to use the editing software, basically he helped me with everything. (He is also the scientist in the last scene) Brandon Hayward helped out a bunch with his mad acting skills and advice on editing and such. (he's the subject in the last scene) Casondra Burnard (the sexist one :]), Ben Orloff (the token Santa Cruzian), Sparrow, Jordyn Hartley, Jenee Young, Leia Delebahan (sociologist), all dedicated time and effort into making this movie even though I don't think anyone understood what it was about until it was finished. This video has had many positive comments - thanks to all of you. Some people though are worried for the dogs - were they forced and did they hurt themselves on the forks? Firstly the dogs loved it - they are best friends and really like getting all the attention. We practiced with the cutlery in advance, and both dogs very quickly figured it out. Besides the "waitress" kept on talking to them and encouraging them. They are very well behaved, and know when to sit still, take it slow and wait. This video was shot in one take, no cuts or editing - and both dogs had a wonderful time..The hand coordination was not preplanned - since everything was up to the dogs - but we both intuitively acted on the feeling of the dogs movement, plus we could hear from the "waitresses" comments, what the dogs were doing.
