Bosnia to Libya: 20 years of NATO 'peacemaking'

Two decades ago saw the start of Europe's bloodiest military conflict since the Second World War. The Bosnian War and the break-up of the former Yugoslavia reignited ethnic conflicts between Muslims and Serbs. Over four years, around 100-thousand people were killed, and more than 4 million displaced. The war eventually saw NATO's first-ever peace mission in its history - setting a template for incursions into foreign troublespots. Anti-NATO activist Rick Rozoff believes the Alliance's current interventions make it hard for nations to resolve their conflict themselves. Lost Images - Bosnia - June 2003

Everyone remembers the harrowing footage of the Srebrenica massacre shot by Zoran Petrovic, the only cameraman to capture the events on film. But this week's fascinating documentary shows that the very worst of his pictures never reached our TV screens. Key scenes from Petrovic's rushes were 'lost' or blacked over, presumably to prevent reprisals. We unearth the lost images, and the completed jigsaw is even more heinous than the already blood-spattered picture. Amazingly, Petrovic has never been interviewed by the War Crimes Tribunal about what he saw. For the first time, his incriminating material is available for scrutiny. Under the watch of Dutchbat soldiers, queues of Muslim men and women are separated by one of General Mladic's men. They are familiar images, broadcast by TV stations around the world in the wake of the Srebrenica massacre. The War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague used Zoran Petrovic's tape to secure several prosecutions for the massacres in the early 1990s and to investigate the involvement of Dutch peacekeepers Dutchbat. But the footage shot by Petrovic appears to be incomplete. There is only one 60 minute tape for two days of filming, and throughout the rushes there are black gaps, cutting right through scenes and camera movements. Petrovic insists he was told to black over those sections by officious checkpoint guards on the roadside: "Everyone wants to be a smart guy. I was told -- 'Don't film these guys. You erase this'". But Jean René Ruez, the man ...

Bosnian Muslim Terrorist Adis Medunjanin NYC Subway Bomb Plotter

A Bosnian immigrant accused of plotting to bomb New York's subway system as an "al Qaeda terrorist" has been found guilty on all counts, including conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction, conspiracy to commit murder and supporting a foreign terrorist organization. Adis Medunjanin, wearing a black suit with a gray shirt and tie, gazed at family members as the verdict was read aloud in court Tuesday. His sentencing is scheduled for September 7. "I want to commend prosecutors for the conviction of Adis Medunjanin," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said. "His conviction stands as a stark reminder of terrorists' desire long after 9/11 to return to the city to kill more New Yorkers." During the trial, prosecutors said Medunjanin traveled to Pakistan's tribal region with two high school friends, Pakistani-born Najibullah Zazi and Zarein Ahmedzay, an immigrant from Afghanistan. His friends have pleaded guilty to planning the attack with Medunjanin, testified against him and are awaiting sentencing. Prosecutors said Medunjanin sought to join the Taliban, but ended up being recruited by al Qaeda to perform a suicide mission back in the United States. Upon their return, Medunjanin and his two friends hatched a plan to rig backpacks with explosives and blow them up, prosecutors said. "As this case has proved, working against sophisticated terrorist organizations and against the clock, our law enforcement and intelligence agencies can detect, disrupt and destroy terrorist cells ...

Is Syria starting to resemble Bosnia?

Nearly one year after the uprising began in Syria, observers and analysts fear that the situation may lead to the country becoming the new Bosnia. In 1992, Sarajevo was subject to the most violent bloody attack waged by Serbians wanting to impose their control over Muslims. A similar scenario is occurring in Homs which has been the scene of a fierce battle for more than a month where live bullets, tanks and heavy artillery have been used. The siege of Sarajevo lasted three years with daily bombardments using heavy weapons and mortar fire from surrounding hills. More than 10000 people were killed under that siege including children. In Syria, the army is using similar military tactics in its attempt to destroy the opposition. We do not know the precise number of people killed since the beginning of the uprising but according to several international organizations, their number has surpassed 10000, including more than 400 children. Fears of the crisis in Syria taking a sectarian turn echo similar fears expressed in Bosnia 20 years ago. In Bosnia, a sectarian war started in 1992 between Serbians on one hand, and Bosnia Muslims and Croats on the other. Serbians committed most of the atrocities against civilians; in Srebrenica, more than 8000 Muslims were killed in the summer of 1995. In Syria, it is impossible to deny that the country's security apparatus is dominated by the Alawites, a sect to which the president belongs whereas the majority of the opposition belongs to the ...

Anonymous: Message to Bosnian People

Hello World, We are Anonymous... As we all remember, the civil war in ex Yugoslavia has cost many thousands of people lives. However, the problem still remains huge in Bosnia. After the Dayton agreement, the country was split in two ethnic parts. The Republic of Srpska and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. American government and the European union failed to stop the massacres back in the 90's, and they also failed to help the Bosnian people towards a better future. Today the country is in its biggest crisis to date. Politicians are paid to be corrupted by the western governments, such as United States and the European union. War in Yugoslavia was coordinated by the west because Yugoslavia was a Communist state with many profitable resources such as gold and coal. Immediately after war the west began to elaborate their plan they had for Bosnia and its citizens. The focus was not put on the recovery of this country but on their new territory and own benefits it brought. Banks were popping out of nowhere across Bosnia and a law which restricted that the owner could only be a person who didn't have the citizenship of Bosnia and Herzegovina nor any other of the former Yugoslavian republics. Every single bank in Bosnia is in the possession of the west in whose service their puppets, Bosnian politicians, are. Too many are blindfolded and focus only on the acts of the politicians not knowing that each one of them is coordinated and doing what they are told by the true ...

Mostar, straddling its beloved river, is the leading city of the southern part of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Today, Mostar is rebuilding, and ethnic divisions are gradually fading. And the new Old Bridge, rebuilt using the original materials, is a promising sign of reconciliation.
