Boris - Farewell
Song: Farewell Artist: Boris Album: Pink (c)2005/2006 Boris/Southern Lord Boris are simply genius. That's all there really is to say in regards to describing these Japanese genre benders. They release so much material either on their own or collaboratively that it is nearly impossible to find it all. However, what is readily available (thanks to Southern Lord) is never dull, never contrived, never uninspired. This is one of my personal favorite Boris songs. So blissed out and I lose myself within the confines of it every time I hear it. I hope you all enjoy this as well and that you go out and get all you can anyway you can from Boris.

Song: Heavy Friends Artist: Boris Album: Heavy Rocks (c) 2002 Boris/Quattro Japan's Boris play various styles of music ranging from Drone to Stoner Rock to Noise and everything in between. This song, featured on their phenomenal disc Heavy Rocks, is more of a straightforward stoner metal song and features Lori S. of the band Acid King on the beginning vocals.
The Melvins - Boris
Song: Boris Artist: The Melvins Album: Bullhead (c) 1991 Melvins/Boner The legend of the Melvins stretches over two decades and traces back to the beginnings of grunge and influencing many bands of the genre (although they were far from grunge in many ways). The Melvins run the gamut on genres playing anything from hardcore punk to adding ambient noise. With a revolving door of bassists, the band at its core is King Buzzo (Buzz Osbourne) and Dale Crover. This amazing track from the Bullhead album gave some headway into drone doom and even gave the Japanese genre-bending band Boris their name. The Melvins will continue blowing our minds and influencing the next up and coming generations of bands...raise your glasses and prepare to be wowed.

Wagon Christ track: theneedledrop.com Boris' first single from Heavy Rocks is a hefty take on the bluesy sounds metal used to have during its salad days in the 1970s. It recalls the work the band did on the original Heavy Rocks, too, which came out in 2002. It's 9 years later and Boris is getting ready to release an album of the same exact title. But before you freak out, remember it's pretty much the same thing Weezer has done via numerous self-titled albums. So there! Well, if Riot Sugar--with its heavy riffs, wailing solos, and seductively clean vocals--is anything like the rest of Heavy Rock's tracks, then we'll be in for a great album. But I still have to say that this song isn't exactly "heavier" than many of the tracks on the original Heavy Rocks. If you're looking for something heavier, it's not here. But Boris is still really true to the sound. What do you think of this track? Love it? Hate it? Do you think Boris will reinvent themselves on this album? Will they set a new high for heaviness? " "Flood I" consists basically of a guitar riff which is repeated and modulated throughout the song; echoing drums and noises are inserted near the end. The noises culminate on the beginning of "Flood II". "Flood II" is a minimalist, psychedelic rock song. Slow drums, calm chord progressions and a guitar solo fill this track. "Flood III" starts with a calm guitar riff from the previous section; the same riff is repeated on a heavily distorted guitar that looms in from the background. The song evolves into an epic doom piece, with vocals performed by Atsuo and Takeshi in unison. The song reaches its climax, and a riff is repeated on the bass while noises and echoes from the distorted guitar fill the background. "Flood IV" consists primarily of this, with the noises strengthened, and a clean guitar that plays some notes for a while. "

This album is a definite must to pick up for Sunn and Boris fanatics, and was easily one of the best releases of last year.
