Muay Thai Boran "Kata"
I upload this clip as visual aid for discussion purposes. Here are 2 "kata" from Muay thai Chaiyuth. A traditional and ancient form of Muay thai (Muay Boran) as taught by Thai living national treasure Chakraphob Charoenrat. In it you can also see many techniques normally sneered at by Muay thai practitioner when they are trained by other traditional arts like karate, kungfu or TKD, such as the high X-block. It is not called a kata since that is a Japanese word, but that it what it is in all but name. You get to see the single form practice and the 2-person application practice. It is not quite as formalized & ritualized as Japanese Kata, but you have to be blind not to see the relationship between the two training methods.

Muay Thai Boran Chaya Fight Demonstration
Muay Boran (Thai: มวยโบราณ, lit. "ancient boxing") is an umbrella term for the unarmed martial arts of Thailand prior to the introduction of modern equipment and rules. It is the ancestor of modern Muay Thai. The word muay which means boxing comes from the Sanskrit term mavya, while boran or boraan means ancient in Thai. The art is significantly different from its modern descendent. Whereas Muay Thai is often called the "science of eight limbs", muay boran is said to make use of nawa awut which means nine weapons and refers to the hands, legs, elbows, knees and head.

Somrak Khamsing - Mae Mai Muay Thai Kickboxer (Muay Boran)
Somrak Khamsing. He is a fighter from Thailand who frequently uses Mae Mai / Muay Boran techniques in his Muay Thai & Kickboxing bouts. He's also the first Thai to win a Gold Medal in Boxing at the Olympics. On top of that, he's also an actor and singer. One of his bigger roles was in the movie, "Born to Fight". Somrak demonstrates perfectly what happens when a fighter's mind is free from the fear of risk, pain or losing a fight. He just goes in there and has fun. Anytime someone tells you a move can't or shouldn't be done in the ring, just remember Somrak. Oh, and by the way, this is the guy Van Damme is supposed to fight in Las Vegas. Muay Boran - Master Pimu
