Jiles Perry "JP" Richardson, Jr. (October 24, 1930 -- February 3, 1959) also commonly known as The Big Bopper, was an American disc jockey, singer, and songwriter whose big voice and exuberant personality made him an early rock and roll star. He is best known for his recording of "Chantilly Lace". On February 3, 1959, a day that has become known as The Day the Music Died by Don McLean, in his song "American Pie", Richardson was killed in a plane crash in Iowa, along with Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens. Richardson was born in Sabine Pass, Texas, the oldest son of Jiles Perry Richardson, Sr. and his wife Elise (Stalsby) Richardson. With the success of "Chantilly Lace", Richardson took time off from KTRM radio and joined Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and Dion and the Belmonts for a "Winter Dance Party" tour. On the eleventh night of the tour, Holly chartered an airplane to fly them to the next show in Moorhead, Minnesota. The musicians had been traveling by bus for over a week, and it had already broken down once. They were tired, they had not been paid yet and all of their clothes were dirty. With the airplane, Holly could arrive early, do everyone's laundry and get some rest. 21-year old pilot Roger Peterson had agreed to take the singers to Fargo, North Dakota, where the airport serves the cities of Moorhead and Fargo. Deceleration test, the "Bopper" sled, 28 Jan 59, 27 g's, Holloman AFB
In January of 1959, I rode a deceleration test sled, called "The Bopper" and experienced 27 g's on a chest accelerameter. Two rides, backward and forward facing. I went into shock on the forward facing run. The sled was about 20 feet long, powered by a bungee cord. It is on display at the New Mexico Space Museum. As an airman 3rd class, it was a volunteer program, and paid "hazardous duty" pay of $55 per month. This video is from the original 16mm slow motion film of the rides. They were studying retinal hemoraging effects prior to the space program.

50 Winters Later: Big Bopper Jr - 'Chantilly Lace'
At the 50 Winters Later Concert held at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake Iowa on Feb. 2 2009, it was exactly 50 years to the day of the last concert of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper before they died in a plane crash that night. The Big Bopper's son, JP Richardson, Jr., performed some of his father's hits. This clip is an emotional one, as he finally gets to take home his father's briefcase from the Surf Ballroom, five decades to the day later, as he performs "Chantilly Lace".

"Chantilly Lace" was written by JP Richardson (aka The Big Bopper) along with Jerry Foster and Bill Rice. The Big Bopper, a former Beaumont, Tx, dj recorded the tune and took it to #6 on the pop charts during the summer of 1958. The Big Bopper also wrote "Running Bear" for Johnny Preston (and recorded backing vocals with him) shortly before his tragic death on Feb. 2, 1959 in a plane crash that also claimed the lives of artists Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens. "Running Bear" would be released later in 1959 and would become the #1 song in the nation before the end of that year.

Chantilly Lace" is the name of a rock and roll song, written and originally performed by The Big Bopper (JP Richardson) in 1958. Originally cut for Pappy Daily's D label, Mercury bought the recording and released it in the summer of 1958; what ensued was that the song gained popularity (mostly on pop, with regional country music appeal). A 1972 version by Jerry Lee Lewis was a No. 1 hit on the Billboard magazine Hot Country Singles chart and top forty pop hit both in the US and the UK.
