Bolivia
Bolivia,is a landlocked country in central South America. It is bordered by Brazil to the north and east, Paraguay and Argentina to the south, and Chile and Peru to the west. Prior to European colonization, the Bolivian territory was a part of the Inca Empire, which was the largest state in Pre-Columbian America. The Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century. During most of the Spanish colonial period, this territory was called Upper Peru or Charcas and was under the administration of the Viceroyalty of Peru, which included most of Spain's South American colonies. After declaring independence in 1809, 16 years of war followed before the establishment of the republic, named for Simón Bolívar, on August 6, 1825. Bolivia has struggled through periods of political instability, dictatorships and economic woes. Bolivia is a democratic republic, divided into nine departments. Its geography is varied from the peaks of the Andes in the west, to the eastern lowlands, situated within the Amazon Basin. It is a developing country, with a medium Human Development Index score, and a poverty level around 60%. Its main economic activities include agriculture, forestry, and fishing, mining and manufacturing goods such as textiles, clothing, refined metals, and refined petroleum. Bolivia is very wealthy in minerals especially tin. The Bolivian population, estimated at 9 million, is multiethnic, including Amerindians, Mestizos, Europeans, Asians and Africans. In 2010, the third title was awarded to the Miss Earth representative, called Miss Bolivia Earth. Besides the titleholders, there are four additional runner-up positions. Un tour por Bolivia. An enormous diversity of ecological zones are represented within Bolivia's territory. The western highlands of the country are situated in the Andes mountains and include the Bolivian Altiplano. The eastern lowlands include large sections of Amazonian rainforests and Chaco. The highest peak is Nevado Sajama at 6542 metres (21463 ft) located in the department of Oruro. Lake Titicaca is located on the border between Bolivia and Peru. The Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat, lies in the southwest corner of the country, in the department of Potosí. Major cities are La Paz, El Alto, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, and Cochabamba. Bolivia's ethnic distribution is estimated to be 30% Quechua-speaking and 25% Aymara-speaking Amerindians. The largest of the approximately three-dozen native groups are the Quechuas (2.5 million), Aymaras (2 million), then Chiquitano (180000), and Guaraní (125000). So the full Amerindian population is at 55% and the remaining 30% is Mestizo (mixed Amerindian and European) and around 15% are Whites. Bolivian culture has been heavily influenced by the Quechua, the Aymara, as well as by the popular cultures of Latin America as a whole. The best known of the various festivals found in the country is the "Carnaval de Oruro", which was among the first 19 "Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity," as proclaimed by the UNESCO in May of 2001. Water Strategy for Bolivia | Global Ideas
Precipitation in Bolivia has become unpredictable - rainfall is heavier but shorter than it once was. That leads to periods of both flooding and drought, posing major challenges for rural regions where farmers are losing their entire harvests. Now, an initiative to improve the country's water management and irrigation systems is aiming at helping farmers adapt to the challenges of climate change. A pilot project in the Andes has helped set up a network of water tanks, canals and a reservoir, and it has also spurred the planting of new trees. For more Global Ideas go to www.dw.de

The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and equalization. en.wikipedia.org Nuestra Señora de La Paz is the administrative capital of Bolivia, as well as the departmental capital of the La Paz Department, and the second largest city in the country (in population) after Santa Cruz de la Sierra. It is located in the western part of the country in the department of the same name at an elevation of roughly 3650 m (11975 ft) (the city is built on steep hills) above sea level, making it the world's highest "de facto" capital city, or administrative capital. While the official capital of Bolivia is Sucre and it is the seat of Justice, La Paz has more government departments, hence the "de facto" qualifier. The city sits in a "bowl" surrounded by the high mountains of the altiplano. As it grows, the city of La Paz climbs the hills, resulting in varying elevations from 3000 meters to 4100 meters (9840 ft to 13450 ft). Overlooking the city is towering triple-peaked Illimani, which is always snow-covered and can be seen from several spots of the city, including from the neighbor city of El Alto. As of the 2001 census, the city had a population of 877363. La Paz ...

Bolivian nationalisation criticised
www.euronews.com The European Union and Spain have spoken out again the Bolivian government's nationalisation of the local unit of Spanish power transmission company Red Electrica. Brussels says the move sends a negative signal to international investors over doing business in Bolivia. John Clancy, trade spokesman for the European Commission, the EU's executive, said: "Actions like this one necessarily send a negative signal to international investors over the business and investment climate in Bolivia." "We trust the Bolivian authorities will fully uphold their investment agreements with Spain and ensure prompt and adequate compensation for this expropriation." Spain's Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said Madrid does not like what has happened, but said Bolivia has guaranteed compensation will be paid. He added: "We believe it's fundamental to maintain legal security when investing in countries like Bolivia," Bolivia's leftist President Evo Morales justified the nationalisation by saying the company had failed to invest enough and that he has "an obligation to.. recover what is ours." At the same time Bolivia took pains to reassure Spanish energy group Repsol's chairman Antonio Brufau that its investments in the country are safe. Morales made that pledge at the opening of a Repsol gas plant said to be worth around 100 million euros. Repsol is obviously nervous following the recent nationalisation by Argentina of Repsol's stake in its YPF subsidiary in Argentina. Spain ...

Bolivian protesters use official as shield
Amazonian indigenous groups in Bolivia have staged massive protests for more than a week against a government highway project imposed on their land. In an unusual tactic recently used to avoid violent police attempts to crush the protests, demonstrators forced David Choquehuanca, the country's foreign minister, to march against the project with them against his own will. While the government says the road is being built because its needed for development, the natives fear an invasion of settlers and are struggling to maintain their nature preserve. Azhar Sukri reports.

Jewish American Sits Almost a Year With No Charges in Bolivian Prison
In a grim Bolivian prison, a lone Jewish American man has languished for nearly a year, uncharged by authorities who have accused him of money laundering, but he says he is innocent of any wrongdoing and refuses to give in. Jacob Ostreicher is a 53-year-old flooring contractor from Brooklyn. It's a family business, selling and installing flooring mostly for commercial clients in the New York City area. In 2008, as the construction industry collapsed in the US, Jacob said he heard from a family friend -- a prominent lawyer in Switzerland -- about a promising investment opportunity: growing rice in Bolivia. Ostreicher said he put $200000 -- his life savings -- into the venture and became a very junior partner in a $25 million project. He said things went well for a year or so. The first harvest yielded nearly 40 million pounds of rice. More than 200 Bolivian workers were employed in the business. Ostreicher helped manage it, traveling frequently to Bolivia. Then in 2011, Bolivian police arrested one of Ostreicher's former employees and accused him of being involved with drug criminals. Ostreicher said he cooperated fully with police -- and then was arrested himself. Prosecutors claimed they were investigating whether the $25 million that started the rice business came from drug money. "So we spent close to $20000 to get together 1300 documents to show them the origin of the money," Ostreicher said. "We provided that to the judge. And the judge gave me my freedom." But six ...
