Way back in 1964, New York filmmaker, David Hoffman was headed down with his new 16mm hand help camera (weight 49 lbs!) to spend three weeks driving the backcountry around Madison County, North Carolina, in the center of Appalachia, with the 82 year old founder of the pioneer Asheville Mountain Music and Dance Festival, Bascom Lamar Lunsford. The resulting film, "Bluegrass Roots" lets you hear and experience the hard scrabbling, dirt road real people sounds that dominated the back country of the southern mountains 40 years ago. It presents a string of the most extraordinary singers, players and dancers the BlueGrass Mountains had to offer. Many later became famous. Some were never heard from again. Most of the songs are classics, including Lunsford's own tune, "Mountain Dew." When this film aired on Public Television in 1965, TV Guide gave it a full-page positive review, because Americans had never seen a documentary on the roots of Bluegrass and Country music. This has already been called the "Holy Grail" of Phish Videos. This is a FREELY TRADED, NEVER SOLD home movie of Phish Backstage. Total running time 1 hour 20 minutes. The Rev. Jeff Mosier (Blueground Undergrass) was contracted by Phish in the Fall of 1994, to help them learn Bluegrass. They flew him to Michigan and Gordon picked him up in a limo, and they had their first lesson on 11-14-94, same night as Grand Rapids. Bluegrass Jam in Brookline 2
Greg Fleischut (guitar-left), Etienne Cremieux (mandolin), Erik Oliver (guitar-right), April 2006 Greg and Etienne met at David Grisman's mandolin symposium in Santa Cruz in the summer of 2006. Both were 15 at the time. Greg is from San Francisco, Etienne from Brookline, Mass. They became fast friends and have continued to get together at various bluegrass festivals and on vacations. This video was taken during Greg's visit to Brookline when the guys were just sitting in Etienne's living room jamming. It was taken with a simple Sony Cybershot camera (not even a video camera) and the guys probably didn't even know that they were being filmed. Both have played bluegrass for a few years by then. Both play multiple instruments, Etienne is a wicked fiddler. They also regularly get together at Rockygrass academy and festival. Both also play jazz, classical, and other genres. Greg composes music, sings, and plays guitar with an indie rock band he started with a group of friends as a freshman in high school called The Audiophiles (check them out at www.myspace.com/theaudiophilescali and on itunes. Super Mario World Athletic Theme
The Nameless Guy plays the athletic theme from the SNES video game Super Mario World. He got his banjo since two weeks and thought it would be nice to learn this little tune. NOTE: No tabs or sheet music. Just my ears and a SNES cartridge. There hasn't been any intention to make an EXACT copy. EXTRA NOTE: The lowest string of the bass was broken, the other strings about two years old. The bass is out of tune; deal with it. I knew it right before I uploaded the video, but was too lazy to reshoot and rerecord the whole thing for some picky people I don't know personally...
