Mind the Gap, an analysis of worldwide trade in Mediterranean bluefin tuna, shows a significant gap in the trade of bluefin tuna, compared to what can be caught legally every year. In 2008, the gap between the trade and quota was 31 percent. By 2010, that gap grew to 141 percent. But solutions exist. Pew is calling for an electronic catch documentation system to replace the current paper system, to allow for better tracking and monitoring of the bluefin tuna trade. 1000lb Bluefin Tuna PEI
Fished aboard the Lil' Miss Maddy with Captain Tony McDonald and the Princess Nova with Captain Bradley McDonald for Giant Tuna for a few days. We were able to land an 800lb in 40 mins and multiple 1000lb+ Giant Bluefin Tuna on an 80 standup setup with a Braid Powerplay rod and an Okuma Makaira reel.
Bluefin Tuna 3/16/12
We were fishing out of Pirates Cove on the A Salt Weapon, when the mate hooked up on a popper. He didnt have to ask twice as I quickly grabbed the rod. The fight was back and forth for and just as the fish nears the boat, my harness snaps and I nearly lost the rod if it wasn't for the harness slapping the bail open as it. Unfortunately I lost about 50-75 yds of line during that mishap and couldn't get it back as my grip started to fail me. I chose to pass the rod off to Andy who quickly got him in range for a quick measure and harpoon to the gills. Overall this was the single most exciting fishing experience I've had to date. I can only hope to get back out there soon and do it all over again.
Tuna Hunter, Two 800lb Giant Bluefin Tuna - Too Big for the Fish Door
This is still the first 800lber of the day. This guy came in relatively easy - an hour battle - but does not fit through the fish door, so we use block and tackle strung up to the tuna tower to haul this beauty aboard. When doing so, the crew needs to take care to not bruise the fish - the Japanese like perfect fish for their sushi. The second fish of the day was just a bit smaller - skinnier? He made it through the fish door. Good thing, because we were hauling him aboard at 9pm at night. Tuna Hunter did a wheelie all the way home, with two 800lbers in the cockpit. Trim tabs can only do so much!

Sami Lands 306 lb Bluefin Tuna with OBX-5410XX Jigging Rod
In March of 2012 Sami fished for bluefin tuna with Mogi-San and other guest anglers from Japan. The crew fished on the Sea Breeze out of Oregon Inlet, North Carolina. In this video Sami lands a 306 lb bluefin tuna using the OBX-5410XX, which is Saltywater Tackle's own brand of jigging rods. During the whole fight Sami went "freestyle;" no harness or bucket, just his trusty MC Works fighting belt. All across the globe and Nihon-koku (Japan) headlines and news reports beam the sale of one Bluefin tuna for the hefty price of $736000 for a 593 pound tuna. That interprets to around $1238 per pound. That event is not normal in the Bluefin tuna market. The price of Bluefin tuna is set on the world market, much like oil (petroleum) and averages around $9.00 a pound. This event was the result of the first auction of the year. Also it provided millions of dollars' worth of free publicity for the restaurant who paid the $736000. The restaurant chain Suchi-Zanmai for their $736000 received in return millions of dollars in free publicity, and a 593 pound Bluefin tuna. This news was broadcasted all across Japan both in print and electronically (radio, television, and Internet news reports). So-called animal rights groups who are in actuality anti-capitalist claim the Bluefin tuna stocks around the world are in danger. However looking at the reports linked below the opposite seems to be true. Around 80% of Bluefin Tuna caught around this planet are shipped to Japan. A bluefin tuna, bought for nearly three-quarters of a million US dollars has been sliced up and served to eager customers at a Japanese restaurant in Tokyo. The tuna, caught off northeastern Japan fetched a record 56.49 million yen, (about 736000 US dollars,) on Thursday in the first auction of the year at Tokyo's Tsukiji fish market. The price for the 269-kilogramme (593-pound) tuna beat last year's record of 32.49 million yen (around 420000 US dollars.) Though the fish is undoubtedly high quality, the price has more to do with the celebratory atmosphere that surrounds the first auction of the year. The winning bidder was Kiyoshi Kimura, the president of Kiyomura Co. which operates a nationwide sushi restaurant chain called Sushi-zanmai. The best slices of fatty bluefin, called "o-toro" in Japan, can sell for 2000 yen (24 US dollars) per piece at Tokyo sushi bars. But the restaurant chain is offering the tuna at its usual price of 418 yen (around 5.44 US dollars) for an "o-toro", and cheaper for other less fatty parts of the tuna. With a long queue of customers circling the block around the restaurant, Kimura has limited orders to just one piece per person. The tuna was caught off Oma, in Aomori prefecture just north of the coast that was battered by the March 11 tsunami. Japan eats 80 percent of the Atlantic and Pacific bluefins caught, the most sought-after by sushi lovers. Bluefin Tuna Fishing Report - Sunday, November 6, 2011
We went bluefin tuna fishing on Sunday, November 6, 2011, travelling out of Hyannis, MA. We left the dock at approx. 2:30 AM, and we arrived at the fishing ground at 6 AM. We wanted to start the day off with some cod, so we dropped our jigs to the bottom. After about 1.5 hours, we landed approx. 40 cod weighing an average of 10 to 18 lbs. Needless to say, the cod fishing was terrific! The main equipment used was the Monster Jig. Also, while cod jigging, I hooked a nice 350 lbs. Mako Shark which I landed in about 40 mins. I was using the Monster Jig with a pink silicone skirt and glow B2 squid. After a good amount of cod and Mako Shark action early on, we wanted to target what we came for, the bluefin tunas. At approx. 1 PM, I hooked on to a tuna. I fought it and got it about 10 to 15 feet below the surface. We were able to see the tuna and estimated it to be in the 120 to 150 lbs class. We were all excited but danger followed shortly afterwards. As the crew were getting the gaff and the harpoon ready, the line suddenly snapped and the rod went limp. We saw the bluish white shadow swim away. It felt as if the tuna was teasing us as it made its escape. After this disappointment, my son struck again! He hooked onto something but couldn't tell what it was at first. He stated that it felt like a dogfish. After about 20 reel turns, the line went taut and the fish charged out like rockets blasting. Bluefin Tuna Fishing Report -- Tuesday, November 8, 2011
We went on a bluefin tuna fishing trip on November 8, 2011, travelling out of Hyannis, MA. We left the docks at 3 AM and we got to the fishing grounds at 6 AM. Within about 10 minutes from the first drop, my son was hooked on a tuna. We landed it in approx. 20 mins. and it turned out to be a nice 100 pounder, measuring about 47 inches. About an hour after the first catch, my son was hooked on a second tuna, but it was snagged on the side. This one was about 49 inches. My son was hot on this day!! Those 2 tunas turned out to be the only keepers on this trip, as the others did not meet the size regulations. However, we did hook on 4 more undersized tunas; 2 were on jigs, one each by me and Eric. The other 2 were on bait. We also had a good amount of cod, with Albert being the cod master! Overall, it was an amazing trip and beautiful weather. To make things even more exciting, we hooked on a whale at one point. The buzzing noise coming from the reel on the bait setup was so loud and powerful. It made everyone jump thinking it was a huge tuna!!

Bluefin Tuna Fishing Cape Cod 2011 - Get Reel Fishing
We head out for Bluefin Tuna on 8/30/11 with Captain Jeff Smith (Finaddiction Charters (finaddiction.com)). One fish on this trip; a 120lb brute that took about 35 minutes to bring to the boat. Sorry about the poor video in this show. We had no electricity due to hurricane Irene, so batteries on the HD Camera were dead. We fished the Peaked Hill Bar area, jigging with Ronz jigs in 140 feet of water.
