Mike Shedlock on Mark-to-Model and SOPA's War on the Financial Blogosphere
The Federal Reserve has more than tripled the size of its balance sheet since the financial crisis, printing money in order to do it. Whose decision was that? Not yours, unless you're one of the handful of member soy the federal open market committee (FOMC). Next week they meet -- some are predicting more quantitative easing (QE) may be on the menu. But what has all this money printing really amounted to? After all, the extent to which base money created by the Federal Reserve is actually seeping into the broader monetary aggregates is rather disappointing. Much of this money has ended right back at the federal reserve in the form of excess reserves, earning a pathetically small amount of interest in return for the safety of bid daddy's deposit account. We have seen the same thing in europe with LTRO funded money going right back to the ECB and swelling those deposits above 500 billion euros. So, is this what happenes when banks refuse to lend? Is this what a private sector, balance sheet recession looks like? Well, we speak to Mike "Mish" Shedlock for answers to this. He is an advisor to Sitka Pacific Capital and author of the very popular blog, globaleconomicanalysis.blogspot.com. And speaking of bailouts, the mainstream media is looking to cash in on one with SOPA and PIPA. For the time being, thank god that there's the alternative financial media to tell you what's missing from that conversation. But could SOPA and PIPA the US anti-piracy bills change all of this? We ...

UVU: Mormonism and the Internet Session 8 From Blogosphere to Bloggernacle
Session 8: Digital Religion and the Public Face of the Church Speakers: Jana Riess, Kristine Haglund The internet has transformed the way we access information and express ourselves. Without the constraints that have shackled traditional media in the past, it allows information to flow more freely and more rapidly than ever before. This has not been lost among religious institutions which are increasingly adding the web to their communication strategies. In fact, in 2007, M. Russell Ballard of the LDS Church's Council of the Twelve challenged Church members to "join the conversation by participating on the Internet to share the gospel and to explain in simple and clear terms the message of the Restoration." Church members have taken up that challenge with vigor, flooding the internet with positive messages about their religion. Likewise, the institutional Church has strategically worked to positively shape its online image. The Washington Post recently called attention to the Church's online media strategy calling it "savvy and aggressive." Clearly the internet offers benefits to the Church in proselytizing and public relations. But it also presents challenges. For an institution that values single-purpose messaging, the chaotic nature of the internet defies correlation. Furthermore, the balkanized nature of the blogosphere challenges traditional ideals of religious community, permitting numerous Mormon discourse communities. And the internet allows detractors of ...

Warning: I read this in an RSS feed, in a blog. I just realized -- after posting the video -- that this story was **absolutely unconfirmed** by other newspapers or press authorities. Nevertheless, who knows, the info might be true. We are all warned it might not. Satires like this one are, in any case, caricatures, exagerations. Nicole Simon : Why is a true European blogosphere not emerging yet ?
Nicole Simon is one of the best known blogger in Europe. She is based in Germany. Her blog, "Cruel to be kind" is written in English. Nicole acknowledge the fact that, currently, Europe doesn't have a true blogosphere. National blogosphere does exist in some countries. The UK or France, where the political landscape is more polarized, have a more active blogosphere than in, let say, Belgium or Germany. Mum's or niche blogs exist, though, in those countries. According to Nicole, the fact that blogger still thing localy and write solely in their own language is a long standing barrier before we can experience the birthe of a true European blogosphere. This video interview was recorded at the Eventoblog 2009, in Sevilla.

Jeremy Rifkin: "We are more and more connected in our biosphere as we are in the blogosphere"
Jeremy Rifkin is one of the great thinkers of our time. He teaches at Wharton University and advises a number of CEO's and chief of government such as Angela Merkel or Jose Luis Zappatero. In his last book, "The Empathic Civilization", Rifkin shows how human being a naturally leaning towards empathy rather than confrontation with others. Our education and cultural framework, ao, drive us in kind of "we vs them" mindset. Nowadays, with the rise of oil prices, the global warming, we are getting conscious of that we belong to the same biosphere, where we are all interconnected, such as in the blogosphere. What you earn, I'm not losing it. Thus, that new state of mind fosters collaborative behaviour within huge networks. That is what is coming with the third industrial revolution, that relies on four pillars. One of them is that any building in the future will become its own power plant. All surplus will land on the grid. Energy will become like the internet is today, with a lot of contributers capable of interacting directly with each other to exchange power, as we exhange information today in the blogosphere. The politcal opposition, tomorrow, according to Jeremy Rifkin, won't be between left and right, but between advocates of vertical, patriarcal, closed models and those who support horizontal, open source, distributed, interconnected models.
