The Largest Black Holes in the Universe

Watch commercial free on the SpaceRip App, available on the Apple and Google Play stores. How big can they get? What's the largest so far detected? Where does an 18 billion solar mass black hole hide? We've never seen them directly... yet we know they are there... Lurking within dense star clusters... Or wandering the dust lanes of the galaxy.... Where they prey on stars... Or swallow planets whole. Our Milky Way may harbor millions of these black holes... the ultra dense remnants of dead stars. But now, in the universe far beyond our galaxy, there's evidence of something even more ominous... A breed of black holes that have reached incomprehensible size and destructive power. It has taken a new era in astronomy to find them... High-tech instruments in space tuned to sense high-energy forms of light -- x-rays and gamma rays -- that are invisible to our eyes. New precision telescopes equipped with technologies that allow them to cancel out the blurring effects of the atmosphere... and see to the far reaches of the universe. Peering into distant galaxies, astronomers are now finding evidence that space and time can be shattered by eruptions so vast they boggle the mind. We are just beginning to understand the impact these outbursts have had on the universe around us. That understanding recently took a leap forward. A team operating at the Subaru Observatory atop Hawaii's Mauna Kea volcano looked out to one of the deepest reaches of the universe... And captured a beam of ...

Watch this and other space videos at SpaceRip.com Black hole extravaganza in 1080p. From ESOcast. Not long ago, watching something being ripped apart as it falls towards a giant black hole would be science fiction. This is now reality. Observers under dark skies, far from the bright city lights, can marvel at the splendor of the Milky Way, arching in an imposing band across the sky. Zooming in towards the center of our galaxy, about 25000 light years away, you can see that it is composed of myriads of stars. This is a pretty impressive sight, but much is hidden from view by interstellar dust, and astronomers need to look using a different wavelength, the infrared, that can penetrate the dust clouds. With large telescopes, astronomers can then see in detail the swarm of stars circling the supermassive black hole, in the same way that the Earth orbits the Sun. The Galactic Center harbors the closest supermassive black hole known, and the one that is also the largest in terms of its angular diameter on the sky, making it the best choice for a detailed study of black holes. This black hole's mass is a hefty four million times that of the Sun, earning it the title of supermassive black hole. Although it is huge, this black hole is currently supplied with little material and is not shining brightly. But this is about to change. Using ESO's Very Large Telescope, a team of astronomers has discovered a new object that is heading almost straight towards the black hole at ...

The Black Hole - Commissioner John Wiley Price

A special meeting about Dallas County traffic tickets turned tense and bizarre this afternoon. County commissioners were discussing problems with the central collections office that is used to process traffic ticket payments and handle other paperwork normally done by the JP Courts. Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield, who is white, said it seemed that central collections "has become a black hole" because paperwork reportedly has become lost in the office. Commissioner John Wiley Price, who is black, interrupted him with a loud "Excuse me!" He then corrected his colleague, saying the office has become a "white hole." That prompted Judge Thomas Jones, who is black, to demand an apology from Mayfield for his racially insensitive analogy. Mayfield shot back that it was a figure of speech and a science term. A black hole, according to Webster's, is perhaps "the invisible remains of a collapsed star, with an intense gravitational field from which neither light nor matter can escape." Other county officials quickly interceded to break it up and get the meeting back on track. TV news cameras were rolling, after all.

Black hole versus Blue hole

34 meter deepdive in clear warm water in Belgium. Nemo 33 is the deepest swimming pool in the world with its 34 m deep basin. The water comes from a well, is crystal clear and has a temperature of 33 degrees Celsius. After arrival we went inside the big concrete building. On the ground floor we found the reception and restaurant and had to wait until we were checked in as a group. In the walls of the restaurant we saw some windows that gave us an underwater sight of the pool at 6 meters depth. In the pool were divers and some of them peered through the window to get some glimpse of us the same way we did to get a glimpse from them. When it was our turn to enter the pool we had a total time of 1 hour to spent in the water. The first 10 minutes are for snorkelling and the rest you go with the scuba gear. The first plateau is approximately 4 m long, 25 m wide and 1,2 m deep. In here you can check the gear in the water and make yourself ready for some adventure. After these first 4 meters there is a drop off to 6 m in the middle and 10 m on both sides. When descending you pass the windows with the restaurant view. From the bottom of the 10 m areas you can enter the cave which is situated underneath the 6 meter plateau in the middle. On the sides in this cave you will find two big air pockets. When you swim over to these places you can stand up and take off the mask and respirator. Because of the 1 atmosphere extra pressure you will notice that your voice will be a little ...

NASA | Animation: NASA's Swift Satellite Spots Black Hole Devouring A Star

In late March 2011, NASA's Swift satellite alerted astronomers to intense and unusual high-energy flares from a new source in the constellation Draco. They soon realized that the source, which is now known as Swift J1644+57, was the result of a truly extraordinary event -- the awakening of a distant galaxy's dormant black hole as it shredded and consumed a star. The galaxy is so far away that the radiation from the blast has traveled 3.9 billion years before reaching Earth. Most galaxies, including our own, possess a central supersized black hole weighing millions of times the sun's mass. According to the new studies, the black hole in the galaxy hosting Swift J1644+57 may be twice the mass of the four-million-solar-mass black hole lurking at the center of our own Milky Way galaxy. As a star falls toward a black hole, it is ripped apart by intense tides. The gas is corralled into a disk that swirls around the black hole and becomes rapidly heated to temperatures of millions of degrees. The innermost gas in the disk spirals toward the black hole, where rapid motion and magnetism creates dual, oppositely directed "funnels" through which some particles may escape. Particle jets driving matter at velocities greater than 80-90 percent the speed of light form along the black hole's spin axis. In the case of Swift J1644+57, one of these jets happened to point straight at Earth. Theoretical studies of tidally disrupted stars suggested that they would appear as flares at optical ...

Super Smash Brothers Melee: The Black Hole

First off, this is not me and my friends who made this video. Basically, this is a glitch in the game that creates a vicious black hole that kicks people up to 999% damage. To do it...well, check it out. You need Peach on one team with either Falco or Fox, and either Falco or Fox on the other team with anyone. Two things that should be noted: 1) Getting the infinite Super Scope: Go to the edge of the screen. Shoot 5 three-shot bursts. Then shoot two charged blasts. Start charging up a third blast, then have someone hit you to interrupt your charge. Your Super Scope should now have infinite ammo. 2) This glitch will sometimes cause your game to freeze and crash. Try this at your own risk. I personally haven't ever had my game crash from it, but it does happen.

How the Universe Works is a mini-series that originally aired on the Discovery Channel April 25, 2010 to May 24, 2010. It was narrated by Mike Rowe. This is just a small part from my favorite episode "Black Holes" (original air date May 2, 2010) directed by Peter Chinn. I can definitely recommend you to watch this amazing & fascinating TV Show. Definitely worth a watch but it should be in High Definition! _________________________ Black Holes Masters of the universe, Without black holes, we wouldn't be here!

Who's Afraid of a Big Black Hole

Black holes are one of the most destructive forces in the universe, capable of tearing a planet apart and swallowing an entire star. Yet scientists now believe they could hold the key to answering the ultimate question -- what was there before the Big Bang? The trouble is that researching them is next to impossible. Black holes are by definition invisible and there's no scientific theory able to explain them. Despite these obvious obstacles, Horizon meets the astronomers attempting to image a black hole for the very first time and the theoretical physicists getting ever closer to unlocking their mysteries. It's a story that takes us into the heart of a black hole and to the very edge of what we think we know about the universe.

NASA | Black Hole Launches 'Bullets' of Gas.

Using observations from NASA's Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) satellite and the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) radio telescope, an international team of astronomers has identified the moment when a black hole in our galaxy launched superfast knots of gas into space. Racing outward at about one-quarter the speed of light, these "bullets" of ionized gas are thought to arise from a region located just outside the black hole's event horizon, the point beyond which nothing can escape. The research centered on the mid-2009 outburst of a binary system known as H1743-322, located about 28000 light-years away toward the constellation Scorpius. Discovered by NASA's HEAO-1 satellite in 1977, the system is composed of a normal star and a black hole of modest but unknown masses. Their orbit around each other is measured in days, which puts them so close together that the black hole pulls a continuous stream of matter from its stellar companion. The flowing gas forms a flattened accretion disk millions of miles across, several times wider than our sun, centered on the black hole. As matter swirls inward, it is compressed and heated to tens of millions of degrees, so hot that it emits X-rays. Some of the infalling matter becomes re-directed out of the accretion disk as dual, oppositely directed jets. Most of the time, the jets consist of a steady flow of particles. Occasionally, though, they morph into more powerful outflows that hurl massive gas ...

Supermassive Black Hole in the Milky Way Galaxy

Watch this and other space videos at SpaceRip.com From a distance, our galaxy would look like a flat spiral, some 100000 light years across, with pockets of gas, clouds of dust, and about 400 billion stars rotating around the galaxys center. Thick dust and blinding starlight have long obscured our vision into the mysterious inner regions of the galactic center. And yet, the clues have been piling up, that something important, something strange is going on in there. Astronomers tracking stars in the center of the galaxy have found the best proof to date that black holes exist. Now, they are shooting for the first direct image of a black hole. From a distance, our galaxy would look something like this. A flat spiral, some 100000 light years across, with pockets of gas, clouds of dust, and about 400 billion stars rotating around the galaxy's center. That center -- bulging up and out of the galactic disk -- is tightly packed with stars. Thick dust and blinding starlight have long obscured our vision into the mysterious inner regions of this so-called "bulge." And yet, the clues have been piling up, that something important...something strange... is going on in there. The first to take notice was the physicist Karl Jansky back in the 1930s. He was asked by his employer, Bell Telephone Labs, to investigate sources of static that might interfere with what it saw as the killer app of its time... radio voice transmissions. Using this ungainly radio receiver... Jansky methodically ...

NASA | RXTE Detects 'Heartbeat' Of Smallest Black Hole Candidate

This animation compares the X-ray 'heartbeats' of GRS 1915 and IGR J17091, two black holes that ingest gas from companion stars. GRS 1915 has nearly five times the mass of IGR J17091, which at three solar masses may be the smallest black hole known. A fly-through relates the heartbeats to hypothesized changes in the black hole's jet and disk. Data from NASA's Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) satellite has identified a candidate for the smallest-known black hole. The evidence comes from a specific type of X-ray pattern -- nicknamed a "heartbeat" because of its resemblance to an electrocardiogram -- that until now has been recorded in only one other black hole system. Named IGR J17091-3624 after the astronomical coordinates of its sky position, the binary system pairs a normal star with a black hole that may weigh less than three times the sun's mass, near the theoretical boundary where black-hole status is first becomes possible. Flare-ups occur when gas from the normal star streams toward the black hole and forms a disk around it. Friction within the disk heats the gas to millions of degrees, which is hot enough to radiate X-rays. Many black hole binaries show distinct and highly structured patterns of X-ray changes, which scientists distinguish by Greek-letter names. But to date only IGR J17091 and one other system, named GRS 1915+105, exhibit so-called rho-class oscillations that astronomers describe as a 'heartbeat' reflecting the accretion and ejection of matter ...
