Originally writen for Fred Astaire. Many artist have recorded One For My Baby including Frank Sinatra, but the first time I ever heard this song was when Bette Midler sang to Johnny Carson on his final Tonite Show. I also have the Lena Horne version on a 78 that I play on my 1917 Victor Victrola. All verions are beautiful in their own way but no one creates a mood like Lady Day.

Billy Holiday, Lady Sings the Blues Billie Holiday used drugs all her life. I do not believe she would be the same musician without it, just the same as if she were born a rich white kid! Her music comes from her experiences and her state of mind, which in most cases (as she seems to show in "Lady Sings the Blues") to be filled with pain and experience...she seems road weary if you will. Being a professional musician back then was a rough, poor, drugged experience. The music of the era seems to reflect this. As far as her musical technical ability, so what! She's great! She has more style in her fingernail than many other musicians that have the ability. I love her music...she's going to last forever :)

Ray Ellis said of the album: "I would say that the most emotional moment was her listening to the playback of "I'm a Fool to Want You". I must admit I was unhappy with her performance, but I was just listening musically instead of emotionally. It wasn't until I heard the final mix a few weeks later that I realized how great her performance really was." Billie Holiday, "I get along without you very well".
Here's a rarely heard recording of Billie made the year before her death in 1959 (she died in a New York hospital from cirrhosis of the liver). Born Eleanora Fagan in Harlem, New York on the 7th April 1915, Billie lived a turbulent and often tragic life, and much has been posted on YouTube about her life and of her singing. However, I think her rendition of this ballad, by Hoagy Carmichael, shows that she still had that certain something, even at the end of her troubled life. The orchestra includes; Urbie Green; Tom Mitchell; Jay Jay Johnson; Tom Fasrhley; Romeo Penque; Phil Bodner; Mal Waldrom; Barry Galbraith; Milt Hinton; Don Lamond; Bradley Spinney and Janet Putnam.

This film was Billie Holiday's first and last feature film. She played a maid named Endie. When she was on her deathbed in June-July 1959, supposedly people said she was getting better, she was going too star in another film (title unknown). But it was to late. On July 17, 1959, Billie Holiday died at the age of 44 in New York.
