He was born in the Boston neighborhood of Roxbury,[2]. The name Guru is a backronym that stands for "Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal" and the less often used "God is Universal; he is the Ruler Universal", which are both references to the teachings of the Nation of Gods and Earths. Death On February 28, 2010, Guru went into cardiac arrest and, following surgery, fell into a coma.[4][5] He woke from the coma[6] but died on April 19, 2010, after a long battle with cancer.[7

He was a significant participant in and contributor to the New York hip-hop scene in the mid- to late 1990s. Big L was a member of the hip hop collective DITC He released his debut solo album, Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous. In February 1999, while working on his second album, Big L was shot and killed. While Big L was still in high school, he caught the attention of Lord Finesse, Diamond D and Showbiz of the Diggin' in the Crates Crew (DITC). L's first recorded appearance came on the B-side of "Party Over Here" by Lord Finesse in 1992, the song was the remix of "Yes, You May". Soon after this Big L made appearances on the debut albums by Diamond D and Showbiz & AG which were both released in 1992. Soon L officially became a part of the DITC crew and signed with Columbia Records in 1992. He regularly appeared on the fellow DITC members albums, and also contributed to the works of Success - N - Effect. He appeared with the group regularly, notably on their single "Dignified Soldiers" and their later self-titled LP release, sometimes known as Worldwide Big L's debut solo album, Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous, was released in March 1995. Like this for instance, the full Stretch & Bobbito Show with Big L & Jay-Z as guests on the 23th of February 1995. The only thing we had was the legendary 7-minute freestyle that was cut out. Props to HecticEclectic to upload his recorded tape from that day that featured more shit. For me personally this is the best moment ever recorded on radio... Big L IS the best MC ever, since I first had a track of him. 'You can put your man on too', I wonder if he knew he would be in Forbes magazine and shit 15 years later?
