The Seattle Big Climb 2010, the largest stairclimb event on the planet, took place at the Columbia Center Tower on March 21st. 69 flights, 1311 steps, 788 vertical feet, 6000 climbers. Team X GYM dominated this year's competition with climbers topping the categories of fastest team, fastest male, and fastest female. All set new course records.
Mental Preparation for Climbing
Climbing! As we move into the mountain stages of the Tour de France, this Mental Skills Minute will be focused on climbing. If you are filled with dread every time you approach a climb, you are burning matches that you are going to need in order to make it over the top. Stop wasting matches and use these tips to work on your mental game during a climb. 1. Stop saying you're not a climber. In cycling we like to put people into categories. Are you a climber? A sprinter? A GC rider? What box can I fit you in? Many cyclists therefore define themselves as "not a climber". By definition you are setting yourself up to have a tough time up that climb. Although it may be true that you aren't as strong as other cyclists on the climb and in in fact you hate climbing, but when it comes to the mental fortitude it takes to get up a climb to the best of YOUR ability, you need to stop saying you're not a climber. 2. Know the climb. Take the time to pre-ride the climbs. If you can't pre-ride, then drive the course. Your expectations of how hard the climb will be is part of what regulates your effort on that climb. If suddenly, the climb is harder than you thought it would be, your brain tells your body to back off. In that moment, you suddenly feel like you are working a hundred times harder simply because your brain is having to adjust to the new expectations. Bexhill College - The Big Climb
Friday the 2nd of December saw the students and staff of Bexhill College carry out one of their most inspiring challenges yet. The Big Climb was organised by the teacher of Outdoor Adventure, James Boardman, and involved all students taking the course at Bexhill College. The challenge consisted of a vertical climb on the indoor climbing wall and was the equivalent distance of a half marathon or 2 and a half of Mount Everest. The 2600 climbs began at 8am and lasted a gruelling 11 hours. The purpose of the climb was to raise funds for The Oliver Curd Trust, a local charity providing fully equipped holiday accommodation to families supporting children and young people in the UK, suffering from childhood cancer and other life threatening illnesses. The Trust was set up by Oliver's parents in memory of their son who sadly lost his own brave fight aged nine in 2007. Bexhill Town Mayor Cllr Stuart Wood paid the students a surprise visit to show his support which gave them a real boost to complete the challenge. It was clear half way through The Big Climb that this was going to be no easy feat with all climbers suffering from red raw blistered hands and aching limbs, this was not, however, going to deter them from their goal. The support all participants gave to one another was truly inspiring and when the final climb of the wall was in sight the atmosphere was sensational. On March 20, 2011 in downtown Seattle, Washington at the Columbia Center, volunteers climbed 69 flights of stairs, 1311 steps, 788 vertical feet raising over $1.6 million to fight cancer. Since the first funding in 1954, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has awarded more than $600 million for research specifically targeting leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
