The Bicycle Animation

This is a piece created to question whether it was possible to film animation in realtime. Part of my CSM 3rd year disseration project I was looking at proto animation (really early basic animation) in contemporary design. I've taken a lot of influence from other contemporary designers who are using these techniques to explore the way we look at animation and how its made. As stated on my channel I have interviewed animators such as Jim le Fevre and in my research referenced other people using this technique such as David Wilson and Tim Wheatley who did this before me. I developed this project based on what is being done in animation right now as well as a lot of primary research into the history of animation techniques. Big Thanks to my friend Stefan Neidermeyer who did the sound. The soundtrack is made up of various bike noies recorded during the filming process which Stef then remixed to make the amazing soundtrack. Bicycle built for 7: human-powered schoolbus & obesity tool
San Francisco-based artist Eric Staller built a bike for 8 as an art piece. As part of his Urban UFO series, he wanted to take his art out of the gallery and into the streets. It got so much attention he decided to commercialize it as a bike for 7. Staller named it a conference bike because it's where "the boardroom meets the gym". It's not a tandem, but instead all seven passengers sit in a circle. It steers like a car with Volkswagen steering. So that even those who are cycling backward, or sideways, can contribute equally to the forward motion, everyone has pedals which are connected to a circular shaft (a universal joint) with a chain that goes to the rear wheels. They're not cheap- about $13000 each-, but Staller believes every village could have one. Some towns are using them as part of car-free city programs. In Germany, they're being used as a human-powered schoolbus. In Oregon, one school district uses it as a tool to fight obesity (Even those from Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" anti-obesity campaign has shown interest). Original story here: faircompanies.com

Morning rush hour in the 4th largest city in the Netherlands. Streets look like this when 33% of ALL trips are made by bicycle! This is an ordinary Wednesday morning in April 2010 at around 8.30 am. Original time was 8 minutes that were compressed into 2 minutes, so everything is 4 times faster than in reality. The sound is original. This is one of the busiest junctions in Utrecht a city with a population of 300000. No less than 22000 bicycles and 2500 buses pass here every day. And yet Google Street View missed it. Because private motorized traffic is restricted here. These cyclists cross a one way bus lane (also used by taxis and municipal vehicles), two light rail tracks and then a one way street that can be used by private vehicles. Behind the camera is a railway (you can hear the squeaking sounds of the trains passing) and the main railway station is very close too. A number of rental bikes from the station pass and many of the cyclists will have come by train for the first part of their commute. For those who frown upon the total absence of bike helmets in this video, consider these findings from a US study: "Cycling in the Netherlands is much safer than in the USA. The Netherlands has the lowest non-fatal injury rate as well as the lowest fatality rate, while the USA has the highest non-fatal injury rate as well as the highest fatality rate.
