As the pilots try restarting them the left engine erupts in flames, and then 3200 feet above the ground, the plane quickly and silently falls from the sky. The plane breaks into three pieces and crashes into a field, but remarkably everyone on board survives. The cause was engine damage after clear ice was sucked into both. A system known as Automatic Thrust Restoration then increased engine output after the engines had been set to idle in an attempt to save them. The ATR system's existence was not something the pilots were informed about.
