Berkeley Invents Chronozoom - Saekow

Based on an idea from a University of California, Berkeley, student, Roland Saekow, ChronoZoom - a zoomable timeline of timelines augmented with multimedia features -- is coming to life. UC Berkeley geology professor Walter Alvarez and his students have teamed up with Microsoft Research Connections engineers to make this web-based software possible. ChronoZoom is being designed to help visualize history and to assist researchers in viewing large amounts of data to find new historical connections. A beta version of ChronoZoom was released today (Wednesday, March 1, 2012) by Outercurve Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports open-source software. The idea arose in a UC Berkeley course about Big History taught by Alvarez, who first proposed that a comet or asteroid smashed into the Earth 65 million years ago and killed off the dinosaurs. Big History is a unified, interdisciplinary way of looking at and teaching the history of the cosmos, Earth, life and humanity: the history of everything. For full story: newscenter.berkeley.edu

Renovating UC Berkeley's Memorial Stadium

UC Berkeley's 1923 Memorial Stadium sits on top of an active earthquake fault. In case of a major quake, the Hayward fault could tear the ground apart below the stadium. A huge retrofit project is well underway, and the seismic solutions that are being implemented have never been tried before. The stadium is being rebuilt so that parts of it will actually be mobile, moving with the shifting earth when the rupture occurs. The new state-of-the-art press box, sitting above the stadium at eight stories high, will be able to rock back and forth. Berkeley's earthquake scientists are known to be among the best in the world, and they played a key role in working with the design team on the retrofit. There's also a large training facility being built underground next to the stadium, for use by 13 Cal sports teams. UC Berkeley Leaping Lizard & Robot

University of California, Berkeley, biologists and engineers studied how lizards leap successfully even when they slip and stumble. The lizards swing their tails upward to prevent them from pitching head-over-heels into a rock. After the team added a tail to a robotic car named Tailbot, they discovered that robots and lizards must actively adjust the angle of their tails just right to remain upright. This video shows, in normal and slow-motion, an Agama lizard after a leap from a surface with good traction versus a slippery surface, showing how the lizard uses its tail to prevent forward pitch, and Tailbot, a wheeled robot with a tail, taking a nose-dive off a cliff with a passive tail, but able to maintain its orientation with an actively controlled tail.
