The Soul of Ben Webster - His Emotional Tenor Saxophone
Teddy Wilson, piano; Ben Webster, tenor saxophone. Look carefully after Teddy Wilson's solo and you'll see tears streaming down Ben's cheek. Benjamin Francis Webster, 27 March 1909, Kansas City, Missouri, USA, d. 20 September 1973, Amsterdam, Netherlands. After studying violin and piano, and beginning his professional career on the latter instrument, Webster took up the tenor saxophone around 1930. He quickly became adept on this instrument; within a year he was playing with Bennie Moten and later worked with Andy Kirk and Fletcher Henderson. In the mid-30s he also played briefly with numerous bands mostly in and around New York, including spells with Duke Ellington. In 1940 he became a permanent member of the Ellington band, where he soon became one of its most popular and imitated soloists. Although he was with the band for only three years, he had enormous influence upon it, both through his presence, which galvanized his section-mates, and by his legacy. Thereafter, any new tenor saxophonist felt obliged to play like Webster until they were established enough to exert their own personalities. After leaving Ellington, he led a small group for club and record sessions and also played with several small groups led by artists such as Stuff Smith and Henry 'Red' Allen. In the late 40s he rejoined Ellington for a short stay, then played with Jazz At The Philharmonic. (There is no dialogue in this video) This is the bell in Parliament's Clock Tower (Big Ben). The bell at the centre of this film is called Big Ben. There are two possible explanations for the bell's name: - It could have been named after Sir Benjamin Hall, the First Commissioner of Works, who was a tall man and known in the House of Commons as Big Ben. - It may have been named after a champion heavyweight boxer of the time called Ben Caunt. LOST - Ben's Theme
A compilation of Ben's themes from the television soundtracks of Lost composed by Michael Giacchino. Tracks used - Dharmacide, Locke of the Island, Bon Voyage Traitor. When we first met Ben under the alias of Henry Gale the only word that could describe his nature was creepy. His somewhat twisted nature was mirrored in the brassy, twisting theme used for the Others. Learning more about his poor upbringing and tragic past, that theme developed into something more sensitive and emotional that helped us to empathise for him. Still, even now it is quite imposssible to know what his true intentions are and thus the darker side could be unleashed at any moment. Truly one of the most watchable and intriguing characters on the show.

Ben's Mill: An Excerpt
This film is available from Documentary Educational Resources at www.der.org Ben Thresher's mill is one of the few water-powered, wood-working mills left in this country. Operating in rural Vermont since 1848, the mill is a unique link between the age of craft and the age of modern industry. In this 1981 documentary, Ben uses his machines and finely crafted tools to first adapt a neighbor's pitch fork into a sod turner, and second to build a wooden watering tub for cows (a task that he accomplishes in one day). The film evokes the quality of rural New England life, and at the same time provides a close, step-by-step view of Ben's woodworking processes.
