Release
Shot, edited, and produced in just one day for the 9th Annual Dallas 24 Hour Video Race, "Release" marks Atomic Productions' six year participating in the competition. When he's tasked with picking up a stranger from a fast food restaurant, 19-year-old Luke finds himself in too deep, and with too much to lose. Loan sharks, guns, and contemplation of the human condition abound, "Release" is our latest entry in true atomic form. Shot, albeit haphazardly, on a newly-christened Canon T2i and edited in Sony Vegas 9, the footage may have suffered some granulation and quality issues during the transcoding process. It was our first time using the camera, and first time with Reese (the lead) as a main actor, and both efforts far succeeded our already high expectations. Enjoy the film for what it is. It's similar, intentionally so, to things we've done before, but was an attempt at creating the layered narrative featured toward the end of films like Lucky Number Slevin. Petrified Forest, AZ - Canon 60D w/ Sigma 30mm
Shots of the Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona. On my way from Dallas, TX to Los Angeles, CA, I stopped in Arizona to see this national park full of petrified trees, which look like chopped down wood in appearance but are actually rock hard and stone-like. I decided to grab a few shots during this quick detour, and this is the result. Not a short film, nor a test, just proof of my having visited this park, I suppose. Enjoy. Edited on the outdated Vegas 6.0 on my laptop, so the preview window didn't work - I just had to drop my raw takes 'blind' into the timeline and back them with music, which is why some takes start/stop with a jiggle or my hand. Camera movement done on indiSLIDERmini base model. Lens used Sigma 30mm f/1.4, stopped down to f/4 on the Canon 60D with Neutral Picture Style.

Courtesy
A project for ADV304 displaying the use of courtesy in society and how we . Shot in an afternoon and edited in a few hours. Transcript, in the event the audio is too low: Our modern society, while twice as complex, is half as happy. We cast sideways glances at passerby. We judge strangers with a malevolent stare. The cars that we drive insulate us from others. Skyscrapers dot our horizons, their material worth more significant than the value we put on our own society. We walk slow and self-indulgently, blind to the problems of others. We step carelessly through crowds, worried only about our own issues. In our selfishness we struggle to find truth, and grimace in the face of harmony. Contained within all our problems, however, is a solution. Through simple gracious acts, we breed courtesy. Through it, we find the strength to overcome the even darkest pit of society. And while we can't each mend every problem or bad habit that arises, we can all make some change. Because, in the end, when we alter even the smallest of ignorances, we form a positive epidemic of the largest magnitude. Courtesy. Pass it on.

Old Zoo at Griffith Park - Canon 60D w/ Nikon 35-70mm f/2.8
Shots of the Old Zoo at Griffith Park in Los Angeles, CA. The moment I arrived in LA last summer, new camera in hand, I was eager to find new and exciting places to grab some footage. Several sources online told me that the Old Zoo, a literal abandoned zoo with cages and chasms in the middle of Griffith Park, was one such place. The sources were right - the old zoo was one of the coolest places I've ever been, and early into the summer I grabbed this footage with my new equipment. However, it wasn't until late April of 2012 that I actually found the footage and decided to put it together - hence this video being released now. Edited in Sony Vegas 11 and cut judiciously, so some movements aren't quite right - but it is what it is. Some camera movement done on indiSLIDERmini base model, others handheld or on my Bogen 501 HDV tripod. I really enjoyed the look of the Nikon lens for this setting, it has a softness and a green haze about it that 'works' here - although I wouldn't trust the lens/adapter combo for everything. Lens used is the Nikon 35-70mm f/2.8 AF-D on the Canon 60D with Neutral Picture Style, adapted to EOS using a Fotodiox adapter.

The Assassination of Jesse James / Ed Miller Scene
The following is a scene recreation from one of our favorite films, 'The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford', in which Jesse arrives at the ranch of Ed Miller, sitting to hear his one last plea for his life. An Atomic Production Directed by Ben Adams Produced by Andrew Adams Starring Corey Cleary-Stoner as Ed Miller Blake Blair as Jesse James Asst. Director Naeem Munaf Production Coordinator Chase Arrington Dir. of Photography Ben Adams Edited by Andrew Adams This was created for the University of Texas at Austin film production course RTF366D - Directing Workshop under Prof. Ed Radtke and TA Roshan Murthy. The assignment was to take a scripted scene, rehearse, and shoot it yourself- preferably without relating to the actual film. While many chose to re-contextualize their scenes, plot, or characters- we felt, while it'd be near impossible to try and recreate the brilliance of Roger Deakins' cinematography, it was important to retain the relationship of Ed and Jesse and the Western, period setting. We're pretty happy with the result. "Like" us on Facebook www.facebook.com/atomicpro

Marathon
"It's not about winning, but finishing." This is Atomic Productions' 7-minute entry into the 2007 48-Hour Film Project Dallas. The required theme was 'Sports Film', the character 'Bill Black - A Carpetcleaner', and the line of dialogue "I owe you an apology". We made the best movie we could and loved how it turned out. And, although we were somewhat upset with the end location and running of the race, we absolutely loved the experience and ended up winning the Audience Award.
Bury The Hatchet
"Like" us on Facebook! www.facebook.com/atomicpro Conceptualized, shot, edited, and produced over the course of a late night that turned into an early morning, 'Bury The Hatchet' is a short, dialogue-less tale of revenge and redemption. It's most-definitely tried-and-true material, but it was a nice exercise in execution following a string of music videos and non-narrative work. Created as a last-minute project for an RTF318 course with 5-minute, no-dialogue (or voiceover) requirements at the University of Texas due this afternoon, this is one of our fastest and probably most-efficient works to ever complete in recent time. We thank Trevor and Josh unconditionally for working through the night and into the early sunlight hours to make this happen in time, and we're really proud of how it turned out. __ Directed & Cinematography by Ben Adams Produced & Edited by Andrew Adams Starring Trevor Gitlin & Josh Cavazos -Shot on a Canon Rebel T2i -Edited & Color Graded in Sony Vegas Pro 10 Lenses used: -Sigma 30mm f/1.4 -Canon 50mm f/1.8 -Nikon 35-70mm f/2.8 AF-D
Zero / Hour
Produced and directed in just two days for the 2010 Austin 48 Hour Film Project, 'Zero Hour' is Atomic Productions' sophomore effort in the sci-fi genre, this time playing into the intruguing required sub-genre: timetravel. When a team of three young men are sent back in time to stop a crime before it ever happens, their situation corrodes as suspicions arise of murder and foul play. Amnesia, dissent, and gunfights abound, 'Zero Hour' is one of Atomic's most ambitious projects to date. Shot on a Canon Rebel T2i with kit lens and edited in Sony Vegas 9, the film was produced with many segments shot at the very last minute, hence some wider angles toward the end. Regardless, we feel that the cinematography for this film in particular is appropriate, in that it is intended to - first and foremost - support the performances of the actors on screen. While timetravel itself is intriguing, we sought to examine the interpersonal conduct of those involved in the process; and the cinematography is therein a result. Directing/Cinematography: Ben Adams & Chase Arrington Editor/Line Producer: Andrew Adams Visual Effects/Boom Operation: Ben Haschke Production Assistance: Michael Stettler & Alex Koeppel Executive Producer: Becky Haschke Starring: Trevor Gitlin Reese Arrington Jared Smith Special Thanks: David Spence Chan Thai Restaurant

Pages
Made in just two days for the 2008 Dallas 48-Hour Film Project, "Pages" is our first attempt at delivering pure dramatic entertainment without any messages. While there's not much to say about the story- at least, not without giving anything away- it's a bit of a mix between Memento (hadn't seen it when I shot this), The Bourne Identity, and Cover's Story. I flew into Dallas after class one day to shoot this, and flew back to class a few hours before the contest ended. It was, to say the least, a very hectic weekend. The copy you're seeing is the draft I was sent while it was being edited. I wish I had a more polished copy (a few bits of unsynced audio here and there) but seeing as I live in a different city, I can't access the original copy. This is also why the credits are separate from the film. Shot and Directed by Ben Adams Edited by Andrew Adams Starring Brian Hunt Joshua Cavazos, Willie Buggs, Lorrie Puckett Music by Sean Beeson
Redemption
"What are you talking about? Forgiveness?" Following our winning entry in the 2006 24-Hour Video Race, 'Cover's Story', Redemption is Atomic Productions' 2007 Dallas 24-Hour Video Race entry and something a little different that beckons the question: how far is the point of no return?
Quitman, AR - Canon T2i w/ Kit Lens Test
Canon T2i/550D footage shot in Quitman, Arkansas on the way back from a family reunion. Cropped and graded in post, in the outdated Vegas 6. Didn't transcode the video before dropping it into Vegas - I've noticed a quality loss during transcoding, and importing without converting seems to work fine in manageable amounts. Shot at 60p and slowed by a factor of 2 in post. I turned off resampling to eliminate ghosting at the suggestion of someone on YouTube, but found the slowed 60p much less smooth with Smart Resampling in Vegas disabled. As noted by the visible blue sky in the wider shots, the camera holds a decent dynamic range (blue, visible darkness in the sky with a still properly exposed ground) when shot with the Marvels Cine Picture Style - as I shot with here. All shot on the 18-55mm kit lens, all handheld. So excuse the shake. Mostly all zoomed in, at 55mm for an aperture of f/5.6. Shot at 200 and 400 ISO, respectively.
