The beluga whale is a small, toothed whale that is white as an adult. Beluga means "white one" in Russian. It is estimated that there are about 40000 to 80000 beluga whales world wide. St. Lawrence, Cook Inlet, and Alaskan belugas are classified as endangered. Belugas are threatened by pollution (DDT, PCB's, etc.) in estuary waters that they frequent and breed in. It's a Bouncing Baby Beluga! Qila gave birth to her first calf at 4:28 PM Tuesday, June 10, 2008. This newborn beluga is: about 1.5 metres long and weighs more than 50 kilograms (at birth) slate grey -- it will gradually lighten as it matures wrinkled for the first few weeks adorable Qila was born at the Aquarium on July 23, 1995, and is now a mom herself. Her trainers are monitoring her and the newborn calf to give her calf the best chance for survival. Watch a video of Qila's ultrasound on our YouTube channel. This is Qila's first calf and like any new mammal mom she is learning how to care for her baby. One of the first few milestones the veterinary staff will be looking for is bonding and nursing. In preparation for the birth, two of the belugas (Imaq and Kavna) were moved to the Aquarium's research area behind the scenes. The move gives Qila the space she needs to bond and nurse her calf. It also minimizes the distractions to her as she establishes a nursing pattern with her newborn calf. Aurora, Qila's mom, will stay with her as a companion. Imaq and Kavna will return to join Qila and her calf once the staff are certain that mom and calf are ready to widen their social circle. Imaq is the father of Qila's calf.

Georgia Aquarium Beluga Whale Pregnancy - Chapter 1
Georgia Aquarium announced in November that one of its two adult beluga whales is pregnant. Seventeen-year-old Maris is expected to give birth to her first calf in late spring 2012. Although first-time pregnancies in cetaceans are often unsuccessful in both their natural habitat and in human care, any animal pregnancy is an opportunity for study and the advancement of marine knowledge, and Aquarium officials are guardedly optimistic for a successful birth. Georgia Aquarium is committed to providing the best health care for Maris throughout the pregnancy and afterwards, as it is for all animals in its care.

It's a Bouncing Baby Beluga Girl! Aurora gave birth to her latest calf at 3:39 PM, on Sunday, June 7, 2009. This newborn beluga is: - about 1.3 metres long and weighs roughly 50 kg (at birth) - slate grey -- it will gradually lighten as it matures - wrinkled for the first few weeks - adorable Trained beluga observers are monitoring Aurora and the newborn calf around the clock to ensure that they have the best care possible. Aurora is an experienced mom but the trainers and the veterinary staff will still be carefully watching for the first few milestones after a birth bonding and nursing.
Beluga Sky Sail
The MS Beluga SkySails, the world's first cargo vessel with the SkySails towing kite system, is being used for commercial transport for the first time. It will carry cargo from Bremen to Venezuela on behalf of DHL Global Forwarding, the ocean and air freight carrier of the Deutsche Post World Net Group. The vessel features a new wind propulsion system with a towing kite measuring up to 320 metres, that provides additional thrust for the ship at sea, a sustainable solution for reducing fuel consumption, costs and emissions. Depending on wind conditions, fuel costs can be lowered between ten and 35 percent. A small, 87-metre-long freighter would thus save an average of 280000 Euros in fuel costs per year.
