Drum Groove Analysis - Carter Beauford in "Where Are You Going" by Dave Matthews Band
This is such a neat little groove. I heard this song for the first time in years the other day, and a few things struck me: 1) Steve Gadd's influence is spread so far and wide that it (somehow) often gets overlooked. 2) There's a reason we all spend time learning those outdated old rudiments, or with our heads buried in "Stick Control"... even if we want to be 'just' rock drummers.(!) As to the execution of the groove itself... embrace the paradiddle-didlle. In this song's chorus pattern, it's the right-handed variant: RLRRLL If you accent the 1st and 4th notes within the pattern, and really quietly ghost the remainder, you'll be well on your way to perfecting this. That accent pattern (emphasized in the hi-hat and bass drum) will create the 4 over 3 tension you sense in the chorus groove. Something else that'll bring this pattern full circle: If you put your right hand on your ride cymbal, left on the snare, and play that accented paradiddle-didlle over and over, what do you get? It's just the basic jazz ride feel(!), with the intervening notes on the snare. It's yet more evidence that a diversity of musical techniques and influences will never hurt you. Carter has such a varied stylistic background that he can draw from it on demand, without thought. That's probably what happened here. Very cool. Have fun with this groove. It really is a nice one.
