But then again, after watching it most said that if you followed along with what the presenter (a professor emeritus of Physics at Univ of Colorado-Boulder) is saying, it's quite easy to pay attention, because it is so damn compelling. Then Shut It Down
Bartlet says "no go" to the Speaker of the House. A disastrous fiscal crisis looms when the federal government is shut down after the President and the powerful Republican Speaker of the House (Steven Culp) disagree over an extra two percent in budget reductions that would trim many of Bartlet's key social programs. Opinion polls reveal that the public blames the Democrats for the impasse. As Leo, Josh and Toby send the staff home, the trio remains uneasy as the President refuses to compromise -- until he hatches a bold plan to personally and publicly challenge the Republicans in the halls of the Capitol. By marching to the Capitol, the President humbles himself and thus re-gains public support by symbolically proving that he is the one who is willing to make the effort to overcome the impasse. Speaker Haffley's counter-measure -- snubbing the President by refusing to meet with him right away -- backfires when the President eventually leaves, indicating to the public that after the President had taken the first step to resolving the shutdown crisis, it was Congress who had chosen politics over negotiation.

Part 1 of an engaging talk by Al Bartlett. Professor Bartlett has given his celebrated one-hour lecture, "Arithmetic, Population and Energy: Sustainability 101" over 1600 times to audiences with an average attendance of 80 in the United States and world-wide. His audiences have ranged from junior high school and college students to corporate executives and scientists, and to congressional staffs. He first gave the talk in September, 1969, and subsequently has presented it an average of once every 8.5 days for 36 years. On one play, Brockman snagged a rebound with his right hand, took off upcourt, slipped past the pressure with a slick behind-the-back dribble and scored a layup on a give-and-go. Chalmers scored 10 points in the quarter on a variety of equally impressive moves, including one when he drove left-handed toward the basket and quickly spun right for the layup. Bartlett coach Ronnie Chalmers, Mario's father, said some players on his team had butterflies. It was the first game of the season and only two players returned from last year's 24-2 Alaska 4A runner-up squad. He also said four of his players stayed at home because of eligibility issues.
