Bamboo Railway - Cambodia
November 2006 Enterprising locals in Battambang, Cambodia, have developed a unique railway. It's made from recycled tank wheels, small motorcycle engines and lashings of bamboo. Cambodia's main train service only runs four times a month and derailments are common. Little wonder locals prefer a different option. 'Norries' are little more than bamboo slabs with wheels and run on the state-built track. With a top speed of 50 km per hour, the norry network is far superior to the train. Wacom bamboo stylus for Ipad
This is the wacom bamboo stylus for the Ipad. I was able to finally get one of these and review it. As for now it is my favorite stylus for the Ipad. A few things to note about this stylus: -Very comfortable to hold -Takes very little pressure for the ipad to detect the pen -The nib is soft, but feels more like rubber, unlike the sponge like feel the pogo has. -Excellent weight on it compared to any other pen I have tested. -Does not have pressure sensitivity. Take in mind it may be wacom but it does not have that option as it is just a pen. We will have to wait for an app to provide that for us or a different style of pen. -Pen can be customized. You can change the nib out and remove the pen clip if you wanted. -Pen is about $30 usd on the wacom website. All In all I really like and recommend this pen. It is soft, easy to use and I do not feel like it is going to scratch my screen at all. It reads you strokes in a variety of angles which is a huge plus if you like to sketch. ABOUT ANGKLUNG : Angklung is a musical instrument made out of two bamboo tubes attached to a bamboo frame. The tubes are carved so that they have a resonant pitch when struck. The two tubes are tuned to octaves. The base of the frame is held with one hand while the other hand shakes the instrument rapidly from side to side. This causes a rapidly repeating note to sound. Thus each of three or more angklung performers in an ensemble will play just one note and together complete melodies are produced. Angklung is popular throughout Southeast Asia, but originated from Indonesia (used and played by the Sundanese since the ancient times). The Angklung got more international attention when Daeng Soetigna, from Bandung, West Java, expanded the angklung notations not only to play traditional pélog or sléndro scales, but also diatonic scale in 1938. Since then, angklung is often played together with other western music instruments in an orchestra. One of the first well-known performances of angklung in an orchestra was during the Bandung Conference in 1955. A few years later, Udjo Ngalagena, a student of Daeng Soetigna, opened his "Saung Angklung" (House of Angklung) in 1966 as centre of its development. Indonesia: building bamboo shelters
The International Federations community-based early-recovery programme has supported tens of thousands of quake survivors to take control of their own recovery. With support from trained Red Cross volunteers and students from local universities, affected communities have managed and implemented the construction of more than 14000 quake-resilient transitional shelters. The earthquake-resilient shelters are made out of local materials such as bamboo and rope and cost the equivalent of around 185 Swiss francs ($150 USD/ €118). They can be constructed in four to five days and should last up to six years. Shelter is a critical determinant for survival in the initial stages of a disaster. Beyond survival, shelter is necessary for security and personal safety, protection from the elements and resistance to ill health and disease. The impact of a disaster such as an earthquake or a cyclone can result in the destruction of or damage to existing housing, rendering it uninhabitable, or force people to leave their existing housing and seek alternative shelter elsewhere in the case of floods or warnings of a hurricane.
