I built the ball machine because I thought my dog Jerry, might like it and that it would be something fun for me to build. So after two years of on and off work, with many safety features such as IR proximity sensors to protect Jerry and my son from the machine, I finally complete. Far from being a replacement for me, I was always right there with him enjoying his fun. And with all the troubles that I went through to build the ball machine, I still end up throwing more balls than that the machine could count! According to the computer, he played with the machine by himself only 3 times in his life. I recently put this video on YouTube to keep alive my earlier memories of him and (hopefully) provide some "humorous distractions" for anyone that might drop by. Please enjoy the video.

Hurricane Balls
The 'Hurricane Balls' consist of two ball bearings welded together by passing 800 Amps through them. If you spin the Hurricane Balls on a smooth surface, you can use the plastic pipe to blow at one side of the Hurricane Balls. Not only does this keeps them spinning, you can accelerate them up to incredible speeds. Speeds of 12000 rpm have been recorded for the Hurricane Balls using a laboratory strobe light. At home, it is possible to use a tv as a simple stroboscope. Dr Adam Chalcraft writes "I can easily get a speed of 3600 RPM, and more to the point I can easily measure this, by putting the top in front of my (NTSC) TV in a dark room. As it runs down, I can clearly see 60Hz, 30Hz, 20Hz and so on. Of course if you try it in front of a PAL TV (in the UK) you will see 50Hz, 25Hz and so on." Thanks for that, Adam. Any smooth surface will work for spinning on, but the very best is a concave mirror, eg those round, magnifying bathroom mirrors. Here's how it's done: DUMBBELL MILITARY PRESS - 4 DROP-SETS: Just like a regular military press, but with dumbbells. Try to arch your back and bend your legs as little as possible to really isolate your shoulders. UPRIGHT ROW - 4 DROP SETS: Hold the dumbbells in front of you, and row them upwards towards you head. Try to avoid SWINGING the weight up with your back -- stand as straight as possible, and move the weight upwards with your shoulders. I didn't have any lighter dumbbells, but as I said in the video usually I will use a lighter weight than this and use my back less when doing this.
