Here's more from our correspondent. Heinz von Holzen is an awarding chef who has lived in Bali for over two decades. Married to a Balinese woman, he owns a villa resort and restaurant and helps promote Balinese culture. Heinz organizes cooking classes showcasing traditional Balinese food and has surprising words about the tourists in Bali. [Heinz von Holzen, Chef and Entrepreneur]: "Probably 99% of the people who come to Bali will end up never ever trying a Balinese meal. Everyone who comes to Bali associates Balinese food with four dishes: nasi goreng, mi goreng, sate, gado gado. None of the four dishes is Balinese. Nasi goreng, although it is perceived as Indonesia's most famous dish, is not even Indonesian, it is Chinese. Nasi means rice, goreng means fried, fried rice is Chinese. History of nasi gorgeng dates over 3000 years back to ancient China." In the early 90's, Heinz came to Bali as an executive chef at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. As a newcomer he was faced with challenges living in Bali, but now local chefs come and ask him how to cook traditional Balinese dishes. [Heinz von Holzen, Chef and Entrepreneur]: "When I came to Bali there was no literature, there were no books ...
Graeme Revell - Balinese Twilights
The inspiration for The Insect Musicians comes from this Oriental poetic tradition. In the West there has been the odd exwnple of nature and formalism colliding in music, eg "The Flight of the Bumblebee", and recently Messaien's transcriptions of bird song, rather more beautiful. But they are always perfortned on instruments of the modem orchestra, and only bear an awkward timbral relationship with the songs they would imitate. Now, for the first time, digital technology allows the sampling and manipulation of any natural sound source. Man can now see nature in a new light, and relate to it in complementary, creative ways. The insect produces sounds which go far beyond the boundaries of natural perception: m their pitch (which is often too high); in their rhythms (which are often too fast); and in their timbres (which can be too complex). i) Only a few of the insects are ever heard by man, and still fewer in the industrialized West. Best known, of course, are the crickets, grasshoppers, and cicadae. But a great many others produce sounds of communication and by virtue of their other activities. One of most important roles of the new technology is to bring these silent songs into the human acoustic and time scale. ii) Furthermore, by being able to sample and use the sound itself, and variations of it, we have the possibility of the creation of new instruments, entire new orchestras of timbres. iii) And in the microscopic analysis of the sounds and their organization ...

Balinese perform costly ceremonies
Authorities in Bali have urged Hindus to stop spending a large part of their income on ceremonies. Balinese perform ceremonies many times that a day cost up to as much as a third of their daily income. The Balinese not only have ceremonies for every stage in their lives but also for their to bless their possessions and show thankfulness. Although it is difficult to change this long held habit, the governments message is slowly reaching the faithful. Al Jazeera's Step Vaessen reports from Bali

Balinese Gamelan - Kebyar style (Bali Arts Festival 1997)
Some more footage from the 1997 Bali Arts Festival in Denpasar Indonesia. It's interesting to me hearing the difference in tunings between this group and the other ensemble clip I posted. I'm sorry I don't know the name of this very talented all female ensemble. They were terrific. Here is a desricption of the gong kebyar style from wiki: en.wikipedia.org Gamelan gong kebyar is a modern style or genre of Balinese gamelan music. Kebyar means "the process of flowering", and refers to the explosive changes in tempo and dynamics characteristic of the style. It is the most popular form of gamelan in Bali, and its best known musical export. Gong kebyar music is based on a five-tone scale called pelog selisir (tones 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 of the 7-tone pelog scale), and is characterized by brilliant sounds, syncopations, sudden and gradual changes in sound colour, dynamics, tempo and articulation, and complex, complementary interlocking melodic and rhythmic patterns called kotekan.
Colin McPhee and Benjamin Britten play Balinese Ceremonial Music for Two Pianos
Balinese Ceremonial Music, arranged for two pianos I. Pemoengkah II. Gambangan III. Taboeh teloe This is a work for two pianos based on traditional Balinese gamelan music by Canadian composer Colin McPhee (1900-1964), the first Western composer to conduct serious ethnomusicological studies of the music of Bali in Indonesia. McPhee made over 40 similar transcriptions of ceremonial gamelan music. Although he didn't live to see it, McPhee's study of Balinese music played a role in the development of minimalism - for example, John Adams' "China Gates" for piano was certainly influenced of such gamelan music. In this 1941 recording, Colin McPhee is joined by the famous English composer and pianist Benjamin Britten.

Balinese Boar Barong Dance Performance
The Barong is a protective deity that can take on a variety of animal forms--lions, tigers, and boars are some of the more common images--and each one is addressed using a respectful title such as Great God or Great Lord. Many villages, especially in southern Bali, have their own Barong figure. The Barong mask is kept in a shrine within a temple and brought out for use. The Barong is one of the most prominent images seen in the performing arts of Bali. This video features the Calonarang, a dance drama intended to chase away evil and purify a village. The Bali: Art, Ritual Performance exhibition is on view at the Asian Art Museum from February 25--September 11, 2011. For more information: www.asianart.org

Gamelan Bali (Balinese Gamelan) - Traditional Music
Bali Island is one of the thousands islands constructing the Indonesian Archipelago that has long been famous as a leading tourist destination in South Pacific or even in the world for its exotic and vibrant art and culture, natural beauties and the hospitality of the people. Balinese Gamelan music is similar to Javanese Gamelan music. The music is in cycle too, however, it is usually faster. One of the characteristic of Balinese gamelan music is that, it has a lot of sudden changes in tempo and dynamics. Like the Javanese gamelan, the instruments in Balinese gamelan includes metallophones and gongs. However, there are more metallophones than gongs in Balinese gamelan. The metal keys in Balinese metallophones are ticker than those of Javanese. These Balinese metallophones produce very bright sound. Another characteristic of Balinese Gamelan music is the used of cymbals. These cymbals create fast rattling sound that usually cannot be found in Javanese Gamelan music. Balinese gamelan : footage + music of I Wayan Lotring from 1972
I made this tribute to Lotring on the 30th of August, 2010. [PdR] The video contains segments of wonderful and unique footage - from a 20-minute documentary published on www.youtube.com by Jacques (..), whom I contacted - of legendary Balinese musician I Wayan Lotring (1898-1983) dancing and playing in 1972. I rearranged the footage a bit and combined it with a segment of Lotring's composition 'Liar Samas', played by himself and his orchestra in 1972. You can find the complete recording on a marvellous 2cd-album, released by Ocora, titled 'Hommage a Wayan Lotring', an album I highly recommend, a very worthwhile buy if you like gamelan music from Bali. In the 1920's and 1930's Lotring was an absolute sensation on Bali, revolutionising musical form of gamelan pieces on kebyar, pelegongan and gender wayang, and in so doing paving the way for others on Bali to take gamelan into new directions. I would expect Canadian composer Colin McPhee to have filmed him in the 1930's but haven't seen that footage (only a few photographs of Lotring by McPhee). In his book 'A House in Bali' McPhee meets Lotring and even devotes a chapter to him. A nice read that brings you in the midst of musical history on Bali.

Stuart Jay Raj - Help Preserve Javanese, Balinese and other Bahasa Daerah Indonesia - Hanacaraka
Over the years living in Thailand, I had many people coming from Non-English speaking backgrounds approach me about how they might best approach learning Thai. Many of these people came from language backgrounds that had their scripts based on the Indic Sound system - eg Burmese, Hindi, Nepali, Panjabi etc. My Burmese maid could speak Thai, but only read Burmese - this was a tool I used to help her start reading Thai. There were also several Thai born Panjabis that could kind of speak Panjabi, but couldn't read or write it. They could however read Thai, so I used this chart to help them learn to write the Gurmukhi script. There were also a lot of Indonesians in the group. Knowing that many of them would have at least had a grounding in 'Bahasa Daerah' or their own 'local language' when they were at school, I thought that this might be enough to give them a head start on their Thai. I originally wanted to include Javanese, Balinese, Sundanese, Batak and a few other 'Bahasa Daerah'. There wasn't enough space on this chart though, so I selected the languages that I thought would serve the largest amount of people living in Thailand / SE Asia. The two local Indonesian languages that I inlcuded in my Indic Consonant Compass are Javanese and Balinese. The whole gyst of this clip is to hopefully inspire Indonesians to not only dilligently persue learning languages from other countries, but to at the same time get excited about breathing new life into the 'Bahasa Daerah' or ...
