A test shot fires from the Office of Naval Research-funded Electromagnetic Railgun prototype launcher located at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division. The test shots begin a month-long series of full-energy tests to evaluate the technology. This prototype, developed by BAE, is the first of two industry-built launchers that will bring the Department of the Navy a step closer to producing a new-generation, long-range, weapon for surface ships.

3000 job cuts confirmed by defence giant BAE Systems 27.09.11
Defence giant BAE Systems has confirmed it is making almost 3000 job cuts at a number of sites across the country. Of those, 900 jobs will go from Brough near Hull, where Hawk fighter jets are made, with another 1400 being cut from its military aircraft division in Warton and Salmesbury in Lancashire. Union leaders are furious that workers have been kept waiting until today for confirmation of the job losses in the wake of the Government's defence cuts. The firm ended days of speculation by giving details of a huge redundancy programme, saying it needed to maintain competitiveness. Ian King, chief executive of BAE Systems, said: "Our customers are facing huge pressures on their defence budgets and affordability has become an increasing priority. Our business needs to rise to this challenge to maintain its competitiveness and ensure its long-term future."

643 Warriors are to be upgraded under the Warrior Capability Sustainment Programme (WCSP). 449 will receive a new turret and weapon system under WFLIP (Warrior Fightability and Lethality Improvement Programme). An all-new turret design to optimise fightability and crew protection, and to cope with the bigger recoil forces of the new cannon, rather than modifying the existing design. All will get an enhanced electronic architecture (WEEA) and a modularised armour system (WMPS). The other variants include repair and recovery and command post.
