Born Richard Alpert, he began teaching at Harvard University in 1958, where his explorations of human consciousness led him to conduct intensive research with LSD and other psychedelic elements in collaboration with Timothy Leary, Aldous Huxley, Allen Ginsberg, and others. Because of the controversial nature of this research, he was eventually dismissed from Harvard in 1963. Ram Dass' psychedelic work continued and became a prelude to the mystical country of the spirit and the source of consciousness itself. Mind expansion via chemical substances became a catalyst for spiritual seeking. In 1967, a fateful trip to India led him to his guru, Neem Karoli Baba. Under his guru's guidance, he studied yoga and meditation and received the name Ram Dass, or "servant of God." He has since pursued a variety of spiritual practices and has become world-renowned for his dedication to loving service. Ram Dass is founder of the Hanuman Foundation, which developed the Prison-Ashram Project, designed to help inmates grow spiritually during incarceration, and the Living Dying Project, which provides support for conscious dying. This is a demonstration of silencing, described in: Suchow, JW, & Alvarez, GA (2011). Motion silences awareness of visual change. Current Biology. doi:10.1016/j.cub.2010.12.019 Instructions: Keep your eyes fixed on the small white mark in the center. At first, the ring is stationary and it's easy to tell that the dots are changing. A few seconds later, the ring begins to rotate and the dots suddenly appear to stop changing. (Or, more precisely, they appear to change much less than when the dots are motionless.) But play the movie again, this time looking directly at one of the dots and following it as the ring rotates. You will see that, in fact, the dots had been changing at the same rate the whole time, even during the rotation—you just didn't notice it. Free Awareness - Non-Essentialism: What is 'Awareness' really pointing to?
www.free-awareness.com - Awareness is just a word. An empty label. It means different things for different people and everyone initially tends to think of awareness as something that is really existing in and of itself. We turn it into a thing. We essentialize it by for example identifying a particular experience or state of mind, as being 'Awareness'. The very word awareness, if used skillfully, is a tool designed to counter that. because awareness refers to 'the cognizing of experience' rather than any single one experience as opposed to other experience. Thus, don't hunker down into any particular experience as being more ultimate than another. That just keeps the dividing- and seeking mechanism going.
