BBC - My Autism and Me
CBBC Newsround - My Autism and Me LICENCE - all rights reserved by BBC, CBBC Programmes, Newsround In this Newsround Special, 13-year-old Rosie takes viewers into her world to explain what it's like to grow up with autism - a condition which affects how children see life, and the way they relate to others around them. With the help of beautifully crafted animation, Rosie introduces other children who have the condition: Tony, who gets totally obsessed with things but struggles to make friends, Ben, who has suffered from terrible bullying, and Rosie's own little brother Lenny, who turns the house upside-down daily to try and make sense of things. These children tell their own stories in their own words to give a vivid and moving insight into what it's like to be autistic. It's a condition that affects the way you live your life and see the world around you. Our presenter Rosie was born with autism. She says even though living with it is difficult, it makes her unique and who she is. As well as telling her own story, you'll find out how Ben, Tony and Lenny are affected by the condition. Lots of children with autism get bullied at school and can find it hard to get jobs when they grow up. In our special film Rosie wants to tell the world what autism is and what it's like to live with it.

The face of autism
Here's the story -- well, the first five years -- in the life of Quinn: a wonderful, exuberant, mostly non-verbal boy with autism. You can see how the signs appeared over time, even before his diagnosis was made at 21 months. *** Teachers/schools/community service groups: You may use this video as part of autism awareness or positive educational training. No additional permission is required. (I can provide a higher-resolution version if needed.) * TO THE HATERS: Quinn did not watch TV for hours each day. He learned the credits mostly from the DVD boxes that he carried with him everywhere. (And if you want to leave a rude/arrogant/stupid/mean comment... well, I'd suggest you worry less about my parenting skills and more about those of your own mom and dad.) To complete this How-To you will need: Knowledge of developmental milestones Careful attention to your baby's behavior A hearing test for your child Warning: Do not assume that if your baby exhibits behaviors associated with autism, they necessarily have the disorder. Observe them carefully and bring any concerns to a doctor. Step 1: Pay attention to babbling Pay attention to when your baby begins to babble. They should start at around five months old. Step 2: Monitor eye contact Begin monitoring eye contact at around six to nine months, when infants generally start smiling in response to their parents' grins. Babies with autism tend to avoid looking at their parents. Step 3: Try some games If your baby makes a sound, make one back and see if they reciprocate. Son's Autism Forces Family to Leave Canada
www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http UVIC -- A popular professor at the University of Victoria is leaving his job and the country after his son's medical condition lead to immigration problems. In 2010 Dr. Jeffrey Niehaus' son was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. His family was working to become Canadian citizens but the boy's health condition proved to be a roadblock. In a letter from Immigration Canada, an officer told Dr. Niehaus his son was, "a person whose health condition might reasonably be expected to cause excessive demand on health or social services in Canada". As a result, his application for permanent residency was denied. The University of Victoria hired a lawyer to appeal the decision but the effort fell short. In preparation of his work Visa expiring in November, Dr. Niehaus applied for jobs and accepted a position in Virginia. Despite wanting to keep the story from media, Dr. Niehaus says his family has made up its mind and is leaving. It's why he is now content telling his story: "I'm much more comfortable with the idea that our story would be an example for people interested in how their own government works. People could use this as perhaps a way to have some positive influence going forward". Dr. Niehaus says he's not angry. In November he plans to take his family back to the United States where they will live permanently. Follow Joe Perkins on Twitter: www.twitter.com
