"We don't really want to engage in this sort of activity but we're not going to back down either," Assistant Commissioner Fontana said. "They've [protesters] had more than ample time to make their point in terms of what their protest is about and I think it's time to give the City Square back to the citizens of Melbourne." Greens MP Adam Bandt, the federal member for Melbourne, said calling on the riot police to intervene was a serious error by political leaders. Hundreds of people, including school children, are now lining Swanston and Collins streets watching the drama, with some chanting "the whole world is watching". "People will be arrested," he said, as protesters around him chanted "We are the 99 per cent". Earlier, organisers used loudspeakers to urge the protesters to call everyone they knew to join the protest before the 9am deadline and passed around marker pens to write the mobile phone number of a legal service on their arms in preparation for arrest. Mr Doyle said a fence would be used to try to keep others from joining the protest at the makshift camp, which he said had been taken over by "professional protesters" in recent days. While some protesters packed up their tents in the rain and moved on, most remained steadfast. Passers-by watched the unfolding drama from the neighbouring Starbucks coffee outlet, where they turned chairs outside the front of the store to face the action. Airlie Beach, gateway to the Whitsunday islands has a reputation for being a great place to party, in between sailing trips to the islands. Another must stop location on the backpacker migration up north. Had a ball in Airlie, went out on a boat yesterday to snorkel the reef. The colours of the coral and the diversity of the fish life just blew me away. Thanks to Jetstream for the trip. Also checked out the Barefoot Bushmans Wildlife Park where you can see a variety of Aussie wildlife including a great crocodile show. Tomorrow I go out on a 54 foot Classic Schooner, the Atlanta , for a morning cruise before heading off to Magnetic Island. It's a hard life..... In Airlie I decided that given it is such a big location for back packers, instead of interviewing an Aussie local, I would interview a back packer working at Airlie. Killer sharks invade... golf course in Australia
A golf course near the city of Brisbane in Australia is giving its members a new challenge to overcome - Killer Sharks. Half a dozen predators apparently were washed into the club lake from a nearby river during heavy flooding. Despite being stranded, the sharks seem to be thriving with some of them are even breeding. Some of the delighted and rather frightened guests however think the animatronic creatures greeting them at the entrance were "a little too realistic". In this edition of the show Max interviews Steve Keen from DebtDeflation.com. He talks about the Australian economy and the housing sector bubble bursting in Australia, Canada, UK and Hong Kong. Steve Keen is Professor of Economics & Finance at the University of Western Sydney, and author of the popular book Debunking Economics. Steve predicted the financial crisis as long ago as December 2005, and warned that back in 1995 that a period of apparent stability could merely be "the calm before the storm". His leading role as one of the tiny minority of economists to both foresee the crisis and warn of it was recognized by his peers when he received the Revere Award from the Real World Economics Review for being the economist who most cogently warned of the crisis, and whose work is most likely to prevent future crises. Frank Bainimarama criticises Australia and New Zealand
In an exclusive interview with Graham Davis for Sky News, Fiji's Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama has lashed out at the governments of Australia and New Zealand, accusing them of neglecting the Pacific Islands. Commodore Bainimarama accused former Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd of neglecting the Pacific, adding Canberra's lack of attention to the region - and especially its policy of shunning Fiji - had weakened Australian influence in the region and had created a vacuum that bigger powers were moving to fill. He added improved relations between Australia and Fiji would only come if Tony Abbott won the next election.

The Australian government has decided to deprive parents of their tax benefits if they do not immunise their children against diseases. Some families could lose over $2000 per a child. And while the benefits of vaccination, for individual children, and for the population, far outweigh any risks, some parents question the policy, and do not like money coming into the equation.
