Aung San Suu Kyi wins Myanmar seat, says party
www.euronews.com Myanmar's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has won a seat in parliament, according to her party, in a historic moment for the country's transition to democracy. The opposition National League for Democracy claimed the Nobel Laureate had easily gained the majority of votes in her constituency just outside the city of Yangon. Sunday's by-election was the first time the 66-year-old has run for office. Suu Kyi was a major thorn in the side of Myanmar's former military junta which kept her under house arrest for 15 years. Despite opposition claims of irregularities at polling stations, the leader of the another party thinks the vote ran smoothly. "I've not seen any intimidation of people this time," said Democratic Party leader Thu Wai. "We (the candidates) can check in every polling station, I can enter any polling station and ask them questions. If there's anything that I don't agree with, I can complain," he added. Suu Kyi's seat was one of 45 contested in the new parliament which was set up as part of an 18-month-old transition to civilian rule. Former military generals still make up the majority of elected officials. Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter twitter.com

Burma Pro-Democracy Leader Aung San Suu Kyi Wins Seat in Landmark Vote Part 1 of 2
democracynow.org - After more than 15 years in detention, Burma's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has won a seat in parliament, sparking scenes of jubilation among supporters. Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party had not participated in Burma's politics since 1990, when it won a landslide victory in a general election, but remained unrecognized by the military junta. We speak with Suu Kyi's biographer, Peter Popham, a reporter with The Independent of London, who himself has been deported from Burma, and has met twice with Suu Kyi. "It would have been extraordinary if [Suu Kyi] had lost, but winning almost every seat contested is a terrific endorsement of her stand during the campaign and also her incredible persistence and patience over all these years," Popham says. As for the prospect of Suu Kyi mounting a bid for the Burmese presidency, Popham says, "I don't think it's beyond the bounds of possibility." Aung San Suu Kyi wins parliamentary seat: Myanmar opposition - 01Apr2012
YANGON: Myanmar's opposition claimed a historic victory on Sunday for pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi in her bid for a seat in parliament, sparking scenes of jubilation among crowds of supporters. Hundreds of people cheered as a giant screen outside National League for Democracy (NLD) party headquarters in Yangon announced a big by-election win for Suu Kyi. Some people wept with joy at the news, which if confirmed would mark a stunning turnaround for the former political prisoner, who was locked up by the former junta for most of the past 22 years. "We have been waiting for this day for a long time. I'm so happy," said NLD supporter Kalyar, who goes by one name. The Nobel peace laureate took an estimated 82 per cent of the vote in Kawhmu constituency, said NLD senior member Tin Oo, based on the party's own unofficial tally. Official results were expected within a week. The party also claimed it had won at least 10 of the other 45 seats at stake in the vote, which cannot threaten the army-backed ruling party's majority. "We are so happy and waiting for the other results," said NLD senior member Mwint Mwint Win. Observers believe Myanmar's new quasi-civilian government wants Suu Kyi to win a place in parliament to burnish its reform credentials and smooth the way for an easing of Western sanctions. Many of her supporters had earlier waited for hours in searing heat to catch a glimpse of the 66-year-old, who was running for political office for the first time. In rural ...
