Chade-Meng Tan: "Search Inside Yourself", Authors at Google
In designing Search Inside Yourself, a popular course at Google, early Google engineer and personal growth pioneer Chade-Meng Tan (Meng) has distilled emotional intelligence into a set of practical and proven tools and skills that anyone can learn and develop. Created in collaboration with a Zen master, a CEO, a Stanford University scientist, and Daniel Goleman (the guy who literally wrote the book on emotional intelligence), this program is grounded in science and expressed in a way that even a skeptical, compulsively pragmatic, engineering-oriented brain like Meng's can process. Search Inside Yourself reveals how to calm your mind on demand and return it to a natural state of happiness, deepen self-awareness in a way that fosters self-confidence, harness empathy and compassion into outstanding leadership, and build highly productive collaborations based on trust and transparent communication. In other words, Search Inside Yourself shows you how to grow inner joy while succeeding at your work. Meng writes: "Some people buy books that teach them to be liked; others buy books that teach them to be successful. This book teaches you both. You are so lucky."

In River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze, Hessler tells of his experience with the citizens of Fuling, the political and historical climate, and the feel of the city itself. Over the course of two years, Hessler and Meier learn more they ever...

It's quite simple and easy to use. If you are living in USA, you can get it delivered to your home. Directions for 4 servings: Make sweet red beans: 1. Rinse and strain 1 cup of red beans and place them in a thick-bottomed pot. 1 cup of dried red beans will make a little more than 2 cups of sweet red beans. Each serving of patbingsu needs ½ cup of sweet red beans. 2. Add 4 cups of water. Cover the pot and bring to a boil over low heat for 10 minutes. 3. Lower the heat to simmer for 1 hour 4. Open the lid and check if the beans are cooked well or not. The beans should be crushed easily. Chew a sample of the beans. If there is something hard when you chew, you need to cook longer. 5. Drain the water and add 1 cup of sugar, 1/2 cup of the 1 ts vanilla, and ½ ts salt. Mix well. 6. *tip: the water from the beans can be used for making rice Uncover and stir the sweet beans over low heat for 5 minutes. 7. Turn the heat off and let it cool down. Keep in the fridge. NYC Tech Talk Series: Javascript Testing at Google Scale
Google Tech Talk (more info below) August 17, 2011 Presented by Cory Smith, Google Test Engineer. ABSTRACT Javascript is the defacto standard for rich application development on the web, supported by many browsers on many different platforms. Each day, more and more applications are being deployed over the web in a browser that rival desktop applications for interactivity and functionality. Examples of such rich applications include Google Maps, Google GMail, Google Docs, Hipmunk.com, and Angry Birds Chrome. However, Developing fast, robust, and high quality Javascript is a challenge within the industry. Unlike C++ or Java, the availability of high quality development, debugging, and testing tools for Javascript is still lagging industry standards. Inside Google, Javascript is the 4 largest language (in terms of lines of code) but one the fastest growing. It is key to all Google Web Applications (eg gmail, docs, etc.) Google has developed several unique tools to help address this issue, and make JavaScript developers more productive, both in developing and testing Javascript code. Come and hear how Cory Smith, the main engineer behind JsTestDriver, has approached the problem and what tools he developed for addressing some of these issues.

Rough Crossings - Simon Schama Speaks at Google
"Rough Crossings" is the astonishing story of the struggle to freedom by thousands of African-American slaves who fled the plantations to fight behind British lines in the American War of Independence. With gripping, powerfully vivid story-telling, Simon Schama follows the escaped blacks into the fires of the war, and into freezing, inhospitable Nova Scotia where many who had served the Crown were betrayed in their promises to receive land at the war's end. Their fate became entwined with British abolitionists: inspirational figures such as Granville Sharp, the flute-playing father-figure of slave freedom, and John Clarkson, the 'Moses' of this great exodus, who accompanied the blacks on their final...

For me it was one afternoon a number of years ago when I clicked open one of those noxious-but-irresistible forwarded emails ("You Won't Believe Your Eyes!"). The task was simple--count the number of passes in a tight cluster of basketball players--but the ensuing result was astonishing: As I dutifully (and correctly) tracked the number of passes made, a guy in a gorilla suit had strolled into the center, beat his chest, and sauntered off. But I never saw the gorilla. And I was hardly alone. The video, which went on to become a global viral sensation, brought "inattentional blindness"--a once comparatively obscure interest of cognitive psychologists--into striking relief. Here was a dramatic reminder that looking is not necessarily seeing, that "paying" attention to one thing might come at the cost of ...
