AT&T Archives: Seeing the Digital Future (1961)

For more from the AT&T Archives, visit techchannel.att.com In 1961, the digital future was just starting to come to fruition. And the Bell System had a number of products that had either just come onto the market, or were incipient, that implemented these new computer technologies. In December 1960, AT&T had just announced an investment of $2.5 billion for satellite communications and improving the network for data services and computer communication. In 1958, AT&T had just announced its first modem. Springing from technologies used for the computerized navigation of missiles, the modem, ie the Data-Phone, was rolled out in a few markets in the midwest. It would be made commercially available throughout the network by 1960. The Data-Phone could transmit at up to a bit-rate of 110 bits per second. This film breaks into approximately two parts — part I: the problems of the present, and part II: the way those problems could be solved by the technology of the future. This film not only serves as almost the birth of the information age, it also projects that technology far into the future. The commercial products that would allow this connected, computer-communicating network? They're basic, but at the time seemed radical: * The wireless Bellboy Pager, which was introduced commercially in 1962 * The Data-phone, which was supposed to revolutionize business communications * The videophone—shown as a credit-card-reading vertical two-way television * The card-reading phone or ...

AT&T Archives: Robot, by Jim Henson

For more from the AT&T Archives, visit techchannel.att.com Jim Henson made this film in 1963 for The Bell System. Specifically, it was made for an elite seminar given for business owners, on the then-brand-new topic — Data Communications. The seminar itself involved a lot of films and multimedia presentations, and took place in Chicago. A lengthy description of the planning of the Bell Data Communications Seminar — sans a mention of the Henson involvement — is on the blog of Inpro co-founder Jack Byrne. It later was renamed the Bell Business Communications Seminar. The organizers of the seminar, Inpro, actually set the tone for the film in a three-page memo from one of Inpro's principals, Ted Mills to Henson. Mills outlined the nascent, but growing relationship between man and machine: a relationship not without tension and resentment: "He [the robot] is sure that All Men Basically Want to Play Golf, and not run businesses — if he can do it better." (Mills also later designed the ride for the Bell System at the 1964 World's Fair.) Henson's execution is not only true to Mills' vision, but he also puts his own unique, irreverent spin on the material. The robot narrator used in this film had previously starred in a skit for a food fair in Germany (video is silent), in 1961. It also may be the same robot that appeared on the Mike Douglas Show in 1966. Henson created a different — but similar — robot for the SKF Industries pavilion at the 1964 World's Fair. This film was found ...

And the laps I swim from lunatics don't count. Open up your stocking, Pull out all the things you never wanted from room service calls... Room service calls. Open up your hands and let me see the things you keep in there. I want to split up fifty-fifty That's the way we do it in this rogue's town. I've got all the glory in the world And I hope it doesn't floor you before you go, Room service calls In the random halls...Go! Whenever, whenever, whenever, whenever, whenever, whenever-ver-ver-ver I feel fine I'm gonna walk away From all this, all that. The groovy, groovy kitty and little, little pity With your splished (? ) watch in back And skinny skinny people don't like that When you call on them Spell me. Spritzer on ice in New York City Isn't it a pity? You never had anything to mix with that Listen to the tender behind the open chest in the hall Room service calls I'm blue and green, green and bluuee Whenever, whenever, whenever, whenene ne ne ne never ho I feel fine, I'll walk the plank for you I'll walk the plank I wore your plank? for you in the dddd-dark Of the captain (Seder row?) AT&T 1993-1994 'You Will' Ad Campaign Compilation - All 7 Ads

i could never find a complete compilation of all of these videos, so i put all 7 together and uploaded it for the world. looking back on these ads, i see that they were eerily prophetic. seriously, the only one of these things that i don't do or haven't done are faxing from the beach (although i email, mms, and upload to the web all manner of pics and vids) and use a vioce-activated lock on my apt door. webcams, ez-pay, self-checkout, gps, wifi/wan, atms for tickets and driver licenses, on-demand video/tivo, realtime online multi-user video project collaboration, wristwatch cellphones we have almost everything. the only things we don't actually have are the automated voice-activated software agent (still in the works), "fax from the beach" (fax is dead, now we email, mms, etc. via wan/wifi/3G/4G), and videophone-booths (instead, video cell phones have existed since about 2003 and even in the iPhone, which i frequently use). plus, i like the song they use.unfortunately, the song was made by a studio working for the ad agency who made the ads, so it's unavailable. update, 1.25.2011: well, there's an app for faxing-- from the beach, i suppose... also, i was contacted by at&t corporate today. they want to use my video for a presentation. i sent them the source vids. they're going to upscale the resolution send me a copy when they're done. hopefully, they'll let me upload it here to replace this one! UPDATE 6.24.11: got the following email today: ------ Thanks for your email ...

AT&T Commercial: Download The Kiss

"Download The Kiss" opens on Blake Griffin in a gym, slamming home a reverse dunk to his friends' dissatisfaction. For his next dunk, Blake grabs a basketball and his Motorola ATRIX 4G smartphone, causing his friends to quiet in anticipation. Blake tosses the ball off the backboard and dunks it in one single motion. Thanks to the speed of AT&T's mobile broadband network, when he lands we notice a video has just finished downloading on his phone, much to the surprise of his friends. The spot ends with Blake's friends completely wowed, as the announcer reminds us that in the network, perfect endings download faster. 4G speeds are delivered when HSPA+ technology is combined with enhanced backhaul. 4G speeds will be available in limited areas with availability increasing with ongoing backhaul deployment.
