Arsenal beat Newcastle United 2-1 in a Premier League encounter at Emirates Stadium. Robin van Persie and Thomas Vermaelen scored for Arsenal. Manchester United are at the top of the league table with 67 points followed by Manchester City. The Gunners are now three points clear of Chelsea in fourth place and just one point behind Tottenham Hotspur after the win.

Robin van Persie scored twice from the penalty spot as Arsenal staged a remarkable comeback to knock Aston Villa out of the FA Cup. Villa led 2-0 at the break through a Richard Dunne header and a finish from an acute angle by Darren Bent. But three goals in seven minutes turned the tie upside down, Van Persie making it 2-1 after Dunne fouled Aaron Ramsey. Theo Walcott levelled before Van Persie sealed victory with a second spotkick after Bent's foul on Laurent Koscielny. Arsenal, 10-times winners of the FA Cup, will now visit the winners of next week's Middlesbrough-Sunderland fourth-round replay. As for Villa, manager Alex McLeish will be wondering how on earth his side lost from a winning position. McLeish denied Arsenal a first trophy since 2005 11 months ago when he steered Birmingham City to a famous win over the Gunners in last season's Carling Cup final. But the Scot was the one left shell-shocked this time as Arsenal staged a magnificent fightback. The Gunners were in desperate need of a lift after losing three straight league games, and the early exchanges suggested they were determined to make amends for their recent poor form. Arsenal 1-0 Leeds United The FA Cup with Budweiser Third Round Proper 7.45pm, Monday 9 January 2012 Emirates Stadium, Arsenal FC French legend Henry only joined the Gunners on loan from US outfit New York Red Bulls late last week and had to be content with a place on the bench to start with, but with the game all square with over an hour played and the crowd chanting for the introduction of their hero, boss Arsene Wenger had little to lose. And it certainly paid off, as the 77th minute winner was classic Henry, right from the way he collected a pass on the left-hand side of the area with one of his first touches of the game before caressing it with his right foot across the goal and into the far corner. It's been seen many times before in north London and it was no real surprise to see it happen again, once Alex Song had rolled the ball into space for Henry. Henry's triumphant return will certainly take the headlines and it saved the night for Wenger too, as up until that moment the game had offered little as a spectacle and Leeds could consider themselves unfortunate not to have earned a replay at Elland Road, just as they did a year ago at the same stage of the competition. Helen Bleazard's 22nd-minute wonder strike put Matt Beard's side ahead and Dunia Susi's header with five minutes remaining ultimately sealed the win, but Chelsea were equally indebted to their young goalkeeper who was deputising for the injured skipper Carly Telford. Quantrill made a string of outstanding saves to deny the Gunners, beginning her fine sequence by tipping a Kim Little effort onto the bar and completing her star performance by denying Alex Scott in added time. She particularly frustrated Rachel Yankey in the second half with a number of fine stops, many of them deflected, causing her to demonstrate her reflexes. Despite their late arrival at Griffin Park which caused the kick-off to be delayed by 15 minutes, the Blues started brightly in an attempt to catch the Cup holders cold, but it was Arsenal who registered the first shot at goal as Scott fired wide from 20 yards. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that striker Thierry Henry is ready to sign off in style against AC Milan in the final match of his loan spell. The 34-year-old will return to New York Red Bulls after Wednesday's Champions League last-16 clash. "He can do it again," said Wenger of the Frenchman who scored two late winners in his time back in London. "He will be highly motivated because he started his international career in Italy." Henry moved to Italian side Juventus in January 1999 from Monaco, but an indifferent eight-month spell came to an end with a move to Arsenal. He went on to score a club record 226 goals in 370 appearances for the Gunners, before moving to Barcelona in 2007. He has added another three goals in six substitute appearances to those tallies since returning to the Gunners in January during the Major League Soccer close season. Wenger had hoped to extend Henry's second stint at the Emirates by a fortnight and admits the forward's performances have exceeded his expectations. "We didn't expect him to be so important for us when he signed," he added. "His talent on the pitch is still much sharper than I expected after being out in the States. "I expected him to have more health problems because at the end of the day he left top, top European level football because he was a bit concerned about his knee problems, but he's in good shape." Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey and his celebrity death goal curse
nma.tv British tabloid The Sun has identified a strange series of coincidences linked to Premier League team Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey. When Ramsey scores a goal, someone famous dies. Ramsey has scored four goals in the last year. When he scored his first goal against Manchester United on May 1, the next day Osama Bin Laden was shot by US Navy SEALS. In October he scored against Spurs, just three days later Apple boss Steve Jobs passed away. When Ramsey netted against Marseilles, Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi was shot and killed the next day. Then on Saturday, just hours after Ramsey hit the back of the net against Sunderland, Whitney Houston was found dead in the hotel bathroom. Coincidence, or does Ramsey really possess the "kick of death?" Guess we'll just have to wait until the next time Ramsey registers with the scorers to find out.
