I spent mine eating lots and reading through The Hunger Games and the two other novels that follow it... I'm absolutely obsessed. (Peeta Mellark, anyone?!) "The Hanging Tree" appears in the final novel in the series, as a haunting song that Katniss sings for the mockingjays. I realize now there are already popular versions of this floating around, but when I first read these lyrics, I couldn't shake the melody that immediately popped into my head — I had to arrange and record it! I tried to give it as accurate of a mood as I could and play around with the mockingjay harmonies that Katniss mentions, so I hope you enjoy it. It was so much fun to work on! ♥ :) This is a first for me — I usually add lyrics to existing melodies and not the other way around, so if this sounds kind of weird, I apologize haha! It's a fairly disturbing song (as is its context in the novel) but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless. ((( UPDATE 05/07/2012: Added Download Link ))) My own rendition of the ending theme from Journey, created from scratch in FL Studio with Squaresoft samples (Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, and Final Fantasy VI). Originally composed by Austin Wintory for the game Journey (Playstation 3; ThatGameCompany, 2012). I created this 100% by ear, so I had to take some liberties. This took dozens of hours, picking out all the beautiful little movements across the wide variety of instruments used. It was truly a labor of love, though. Miles Davis "Summertime" (1958)
"Summertime" is a track from the album "Porgy and Bess" by jazz trumpet musician Miles Davis, released in 1958 on Columbia Records. The album features arrangements by Davis and collaborator Gil Evans from George Gershwin's opera Porgy and Bess. The album was recorded in four sessions on July 22, July 29, August 4 and August 18 in 1958 at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York City. It is the second collaboration between Davis and Evans and has garnered much critical acclaim since its release, being acknowledged by music critics as the best of their collaborations. For many jazz critics, Porgy and Bess is regarded as historic. In 1958, Davis was one of many jazz musicians growing dissatisfied with bebop, seeing its increasingly complex chord changes as hindering creativity. Five years earlier, in 1953, pianist George Russell published his Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization, which offered an alternative to the practice of improvisation based on chords. Abandoning the traditional major and minor key relationships of Western music, Russell developed a new formulation using scales or a series of scales for improvisations. Russell's approach to improvisation came to be known as modal in jazz. Davis saw Russell's methods of composition as a means of getting away from the dense chord-laden compositions of his time, which Davis had labeled "thick". Fireflies arrangement by Piano Tribute Conservatory
For those of you who wanted to know how it's played, here's a video on Synthesia. This is not an official score, I simply listened to the arrangement made by Piano Tribute Conservatory of Fireflies by Owl City and put down the notes that I heard. Original piece here: www.youtube.com This is a duet. The yellow and blue notes are Piano 1 and the orange and green notes are Piano 2. Piano 2 is supposed to apply pedal at each measure, however, the pedal effect did not apply itself in synthesia so that's why it sounds weird.
