One of the longest serving lawmen in the country is doing battle with the Justice Department. Joe Arpaio is sheriff in Maricopa Country, Arizona which includes Phoenix and Scottsdale. The federal government says they will sue the controversial sheriff to force him to accept federal oversight of his department. CBS News correspondent John Blackstone tells us why. In his latest battle with the US Department of Justice over alleged civil rights abuses, Sheriff Joe Arpaio remains defiant. "I sure don't want to be known as a nice guy," he said. "I'm not a social worker, I'm a cop." The 79-year-old has been in office since 1982. Many who have gone through his jails, including his desert tent city where inmates wear pink underwear, have long accused Arpaio of violating their rights. But it's his department's treatment of Hispanics that prompted federal officials this week to demand an independent monitor. "Are they going after this sheriff?" asked Arpaio. "Well we know why, because hey don't like me enforcing illegal immigration law." A three-year investigation by the Justice Department found what it called "unconstitutional policing" and "a pervasive culture of discriminatory bias against Latinos" who are up to nine times more likely than whites to be stopped by a Maricopa County deputy. An investigative "Cold Case Posse" begun in 2011 by "America's toughest sheriff" -- Joe Arpaio of Arizona's Maricopa County concluded during a March 1, 2012 news conference that there is probable cause that the document released by the White House last year as President Obama's birth certificate is a computer-generated forgery! Investigators explained that the register stamp and date stamp in government documents are safety features to verify the authenticity of their documents. But the fact that those stamps on documents purported by Obama as being genuine were actually imported from outside sources showing with certainty that it was fraudulent. Furthermore its 'safety verification stamps' were completely moveable to any point of the document. No original birth certificate circa the date of Obama's birth could possibly have had such movable computerized elements. So the purported birth certificate was an assembly of words, stamps and seals, rather than a cohesive single document consistent with technology of the 1960s. The posse says it has identified at least one person of interest in the alleged forgery of Obama's birth certificate. Arapaio, known for his strict enforcement of immigration laws, commissioned the investigative team after local citizens presented him with a petition expressing concern that Obama might not be eligible for Arizona's presidential ballot. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said President Barack Obama's birth certificate is not authentic. Arpaio revealed the findings of a investigation into the president's birth certificate at a 1 hour and 20 minute news conference Thursday, calling the certificate "suspect." Arpaio's team of investigators said they found that the long-form birth certificate was created electronically and never existed in paper form. The president's Selective Service card was also questioned. Arpaio's investigators claimed the document has "failed every test we put it through." At Thursday's news conference, investigators said they will request a criminal investigation. They also said they have identified a person of interest in the forgery of the birth certificate. Arpaio said he is not accusing the president of the crime. He said they will investigate who is behind the "possible forgery and fraud." "I haven't decided where to go with this yet," Arpaio said. "I just wanted to get the facts of this situation. We haven't accused anyone of anything." The controversy over the certificate has been widely debunked, but it remains alive in the eyes of some conservatives, namely members of the Tea Party who urged Arpaio to look into the matter. This is the entire press conference of the Department of Justice's historic announcement of the lawsuit against Maricopa County, The Sheriff's Office and Joe Arpaio himself. I wanted this as unedited as possible because so many people have suffered and worked hard for this day that they all deserve to see this without filter or bias. It was recorded May 10,2012 at the Department of Justice's office in Phoenix Arizona. Any editing is for length. Friends will tell me it's too long but I believe everyone should have the opportunity to witness the whole thing. This complaint was filed after a thorough and independent investigation into MCSO's policies and practices. DOJ attorneys, investigators and experts conducted interviews with over 400 people, including 75 current and former MCSO supervisors and deputies. They also interviewed 150 former and current MCSO inmates. While the DOJ seeks no financial restitution, it could and probably will yank all federal monies that go to MCSO unless Arpaio cooperates. Sheriff Joe Arpaio: County Sheriff Project on Right Track
Maricopa County Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio covers many topics for the Tuesday night public event at the CSPOA sheriff convention. On January 30-31, 2012 over 100 county sheriffs and peace officers, from over 30 states, united to uphold their oaths of office, protect citizen liberty, and stop state and federal tyranny. Inspired and led by the example of former Graham County Arizona Sheriff Richard Mack, the meeting, which was held in Las Vegas, was funded by the generous donations of thousands of Americans from all fifty states, as well as the support of freedom loving sponsors. The agenda included training on the Bill of Rights, Interposition, Nullification and the importance of Property Rights versus Privileges. Many sheriffs, a police chief and even a county commissioner shared their experiences, challenges and actions taken to uphold their oaths of office, directly with the sheriffs in attendance.
