Argentina

Argentina, officially the Argentine Republic, is the second largest country in South America, constituted as a federation of 23 provinces and an autonomous city, Buenos Aires. It is the eighth-largest country in the world by land area and the largest among Spanish-speaking nations, though Mexico, Colombia and Spain are more populous. Argentina's continental area is between the Andes mountain range in the west and the Atlantic Ocean in the east. It borders Paraguay and Bolivia to the north, Brazil and Uruguay to the northeast, and Chile to the west and south. Argentina claims the British overseas territories of the Falkland Islands and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. It also claims a part of Antarctica, overlapping claims made by Chile and the United Kingdom, though all claims were suspended by the Antarctic Treaty of 1961. Argentina today is one of the G-20 major economies. ( source Wikipedia )

Madonna - Evita - 11 Don't Cry for Me Argentina (1996) It won't be easy, you'll think it's strange When I try to explain how I feel That I still need your love after all that I've done You won't believe me All you will see is a girl you once knew Although she's dressed up to the nines At sixes and sevens with you I had to let it happen, I had to change Couldn't stay all my life down at heel Looking out of the window, staying out of the sun So I chose freedom Running around, trying everything new But nothing impressed me at all I never expected it to Don't cry for me Argentina The truth is I never left you All through my wild days My mad existence I kept my promise Don't keep your distance And as for fortune, and as for fame I never invited them in Though it seemed to the world they were all I desired They are illusions They're not the solutions they promised to be The answer was here all the time I love you and hope you love me Don't cry for me Argentina Don't cry for me Argentina The truth is I never left you All through my wild days My mad existence I kept my promise Don't keep your distance Have I said too much ? There's nothing more I can think of to say to you But all you have to do is look at me To know that ev'ry word is true

Argentina's forgotten province

Argentina, once the world's bread basket, can no longer feed some of its own people. In the northern province of Chaco, the forests have made way for transgenic soya and cattle. Gradually driven from their lands, the indigenous communities can no longer support themselves. In recent years, dozens of children have died from malnutrition and poverty. We went to meet these forgotten families and those who are trying to help them. FRANCE 24 INTERNATIONAL NEWS 24/7 www.france24.com

The latest dispute, sharpened by a dispute over ownership of potential oil and gas fields, comes 30 years after the two countries went to war over the islands. Al Jazeera's Sonia Gallego reports.

Falklands Anniversary: Why Argentina would win rematch

nma.tv With the 30th anniversary of Argentina's invasion of the Falklands, known in Argentina as Las Islas Malvinas, approaching on April 2, Argentina has been ratcheting up the rhetoric. The British Government has rejected calls from Argentina for talks on the islands sovereignty, saying that it respects the opinion of the island's residents. Argentina has also claimed that Britain sent a nuclear submarine to the region. It has also accused London of provoking matters by sending Prince William to the Falklands on a tour of duty. Since the Falklands Conflict in 1982, Britain has spent time and effort reinforcing its garrison on the remote outpost, but severe cuts in the UK's defense budget had caused military analysts suggest that a similar campaign would fail. What would happen were Argentina to try a repeat of 1982?

The two countries fought a war over the islands in 1982, and tensions over the status of the territory have risen ahead of the 30th anniversary of the conflict in April. In recent exchanges between the countries, Argentina has complained to the UN about what it says is the UK's increased militarisation in the area.
