Who are Arabs?
Arab is a person who identifies as such on genealogical, linguistic, or cultural grounds. Genealogical: someone who can trace his or her ancestry to the tribes of Arabia - the original inhabitants of the Arabian Peninsula - and the Syrian Desert. This definition covers fewer self-identified Arabs than not, and was the definition used in medieval times, for example by Ibn Khaldun. Linguistic: someone whose first language, and by extension cultural expression, is Arabic, including any of its varieties. This definition covers more than 250 million people. Certain groups that fulfill this criterion reject this definition on the basis of genealogy, such an example may be seen in the identity of many Egyptians. Political: in the modern nationalist era, any person who is a citizen of a country where Arabic is either the national language or one of the official languages, and/or a citizen of a country which may simply be a member of the Arab League (thereby having Arabic as an official government language, even if not used by the majority of the population). This definition would cover over 300 million people. It may be the most contested definition as it is the most simplistic one. It would exclude the entire Arab diaspora, but include not only those genealogically Arabs (Gulf Arabs and others, such as Bedouins, where they may exist) and those Arabized-Arab-identified, but would also include Arabized non-Arab-identified groups (including many Lebanese, Palestinians, Syrians ...

www.iiea.com In a speech whose scope spanned the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), via Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Morocco, Syria, Yemen, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, Professor Tariq Ramadan emphasised the heterogeneity of the developments in each country. Hesitant to use the term "Arab Spring", Prof. Ramadan portrayed what he cautiously calls the "Arab Awakening" as a chess game rather than a domino effect. He welcomed the progress achieved in Tunisia, and particularly commended those who succeeded in moving beyond the perceived polarisation between secularists and Islamists to a discourse based on policies and politics rather than ideology. However, Prof. Ramadan expressed concern about the situations in Egypt, Libya and elsewhere, and pointed out that Tunisia may be the only success story in the immediate term. The role of Europe and the US in the region, both before and since the popular uprisings, came under the spotlight and Prof. Ramadan pointed to the prioritisation of economic and geostrategic interests. He suggested that the issue of whether the Arab world is ready for democracy has somewhat been overshadowed by the question "Is the West ready for the Arabs experiencing democracy?". Of particular relevance, according to Prof. Ramadan, is the West's attitude towards the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which he sees as framing all of their policies in the MENA region. Eritrea is a source country for men, women, and children subjected to trafficking in persons, specifically conditions of forced labor and, to a lesser extent, forced prostitution. During the reporting period, acts of forced labor occurred in Eritrea, particularly in connection with the implementation of the country's national service program. Under the parameters set forth in Proclamation of National Service (No. 82/1995), men aged 18 to 54 and women aged 18 to 47 are required to provide 18 months of military and non-military public works and services in any location or capacity chosen by the government. Some national service conscripts, however, are required to continue their service indefinitely, beyond the duration specified by law, with many required to serve in their positions for over 10 years under the threat of inhuman treatment, torture, or punishment of their families. There have been reports that some Eritrean conscripts are forced to build private homes for army officers, as well as to perform agricultural labor on farms and construction activities for firms owned by the state, the ruling party, senior army officers, and private investors, functions outside the scope of the proclamation. Muslims all over the world are gearing up to celebrate Eid al-Adha, also known as the festival of sacrifice, with family and friends on Sunday. In the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, families hit the shops to buy clothes for their children, while the local fairground was being readied to welcome the next few days of fun for families. While Sunnis celebrate Eid on Sunday, Shiite Iraqis will observe the holiday on Monday. Meanwhile, in the West Bank city of Ramallah, shoppers flocked to the markets to purchase sweet treats and nuts to offer to visiting friends and relatives, while residents of the Gaza Strip, browsed for potential sheep to slaughter, an important ritual during Eid al-Adha. The tradition of sacrificing an animal during this holiday commemorates the time when God ordered Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son Ismael but changed the order at the last minute to a sheep instead. Libyans have another reason to celebrate, following the death of former leader Muammer Qaddafi, as they mark the first Eid free of his rule.
