Apricot Scrub (2012 Recreation of Scratch Video by Jeffrey Hinton)
***WARNING - THIS VIDEO CONTAINS SOME VERY GORY, HORRIFIC IMAGES - VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED*** This is something I've been meaning to do for a while. I've been long interested in "scratch video" - a term for a form of early 80s video art, as practiced by people such as The Duvet Brothers and Gorilla Tapes. Not too long ago, I was browsing the web for old articles about it, and came across a few mentions of an intriguing sounding short video piece by a man called Jeffrey Hinton - where an advert for a facial cleanser is mixed in with that famous "ripping off face" scene from Steven Spielberg's "Poltergeist". I wanted to see it, but I couldn't find it online anywhere. Then I realised I had a digital copy of what must have been the actual advert itself that was used in the original video. Since 2002-ish there's been a CD-R's worth of old 80's adverts from the UK circulating, which I got hold of some years ago. The "apricot facial scrub" ad is in that collection. I had the idea of putting together some kind of recreation of it myself - the "Poltergeist" scene would no doubt be on Youtube (it was), and the work involved wouldn't be too difficult. And so, a good few months later, I finally got round to doing this. It only took about half an hour, and I have absolutely no idea if it's accurate to the original in any way (I'm only going by a few brief descriptions of the actual piece's content), but hopefully you'll all like it.
