The Anthropology Song: A little bit Anthropologist
Wow, so two years later, and 100000 views! I had no idea when I wrote this that it would take off like it did. I was invited to Philadelphia to play this song at the AAA meeting in 2009, and interviewed by Lorenz Khazaleh for antropologi (which you can read at www.antropologi.info if you like). By far the best part is, I still am getting amazing messages from you folks from all over the world! Thanks so much, everyone; it's been really fun to be part of this :) I graduated with a BA in Anthro and Religious Studies in May '09 from the University of British Columbia. I wrote this song while pursuing my Masters at the University of Toronto, which I completed in 2010. During that time I also worked as an Anthro TA and won a teaching award from the university, in part because of this song. If you leave a comment, especially if you've watched this in a class, I'd love to know where/what school you're from. The chords are super simple: Am, C, G, D. Feel free to learn it, play it, reappropriate it, share it, and add your own verses! Also, any video responses are welcome. *** Lyrics: Hey Mom & Dad, I've got to come out and say, I've got to tell you, it's the only way Something I've learned about myself since I was away (at college) I really think that I might be a little bit -- of an Anthropologist Mom & Dad, I've been led astray, I've been experimenting with archaeolog(a)y On an excavation, tried C-14 dating And ground penetrating radar for the first time -- (if you know what I ...

What Would Alien Anthropologists Think of Us? - Wade Davis
Complete video at: fora.tv Wade Davis, author of The Wayfinders: Why Ancient Wisdom Matters in the Modern World, criticizes the United States for viewing technological prowess as the only sign of progress. "Climate change should finally teach us that we're not the paragon of humanity's potential," he says. ----- What does it mean to be human and alive? The thousands of different cultures and languages on Earth have compellingly different answers to that question. "We are a wildly imaginative and creative species," declares Wade Davis, and then proves it with his accounts and photographs of humanity plumbing the soul of culture, of psyche, and of landscape. The threat to cultures is often ideological, Davis notes, such as when Mao whispered in the ear of the Dalai Lama that "all religion is poison," set about destroying Tibetan culture. The genius of culture is the ability to survive in impossible conditions, Davis concludes. We cannot afford to lose any of that variety of skills, because we are not only impoverished without it, we are vulnerable without it. - The Long Now Foundation Edmund Wade Davis (born December 14, 1953) is a noted Canadian anthropologist, ethnobotanist, author and photographer whose work has focused on worldwide indigenous cultures, especially in North and South America and particularly involving the traditional uses and beliefs associated with psychoactive plants. Davis came to prominence with his 1985 best-selling book The Serpent and the Rainbow ...

Cultural Anthropology - How Civilizations began 1-18
Stories from the stone age Author/Creator: Scholes, Roger, Anderson, Kevin Date: 2003 Deakin University An exploration of the revolutionary period of prehistory that began when humans abandoned the nomadic hunting and gathering existence they had known for millennia to take up a completely new way of life the decisive move to farming and herding the ration of permanent settlements and the discovery of metals setting the stage for the arrival of the worldʼs first civilisation. Stores from the Stone Age ask some intriguing questions. Why did some of our ancestors never become farmers at all? Why do some still continue hunting and gathering despite their contact with farming people and advanced technologies? How and why did our paths become uniquely shaped after emerging as a species from a single genetic family in Africa? Based on extensive research, Stories from the Stone Age takes us on a journey where we get to live alongside our ancestors as they cross between the Old and the New Worlds and into Civilisation. The series utilises detailed re-enactments and short interviews with key archaeological experts Rights: 2003, Film Finance Australia, Beyond Productions and Screen Tasmania
