Angola Economy

Emerging economies are often associated with Asia or South America, but over the past decade, the largest economic growth numbers are actually from Angola. VOA's Sam Reinhardt reports.

Chinese Days - Angola

China bankrolling Angola with billions To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com After being torn apart by civil war, the Chinese are now investing billions of dollars into Angola. But while its cities are being transformed, divisions are being created which are leaving Angolans far behind. It's an uncertain time for the world's economies, but China seems to be going from strength to strength, investing billions of dollars into Africa. In Angola, in exchange for rebuilding the country's war-torn infrastructure, China is gaining access to oil and other natural resources. Rui Falcao, a government spokesman, insists Angola is doing well from Chinese investment. "The international community turned their back on us. The only country that came to help us at the time, to get the country going again, was China". Yet behind the gleaming tower blocks and shopping centres lies a growing Angolan underclass. "The government is not able to find jobs for Angolans. What's worse they give labouring jobs to Chinese, not Angolans", says Liusete Araujo, a presidential candidate. For some, the situation is becoming desperate. "I am disabled and here I am with no wages, nothing. I fought to free our country and now I'm suffering." Remarkably, with a predicted growth of 8% this year, Angola is on course to become one of the world's top economic performers. The question is, at what cost? Angola's Labour Pains

America's New Frontier - Angola

Watch full film here: vodsite.journeyman.tv January 2005 Revenue from Angola's oil reserves should be aiding the country's development. But instead, it's being used as a slush fund for government corruption. Deep in Luanda's sewers, a group of boys show us around their home. "I'm desperate for help," begs one. "I'm eating rubbish, surrounded by others who are sniffing glue." According to the latest calculations, 9% of the country's GDP is siphoned off. Even the US ambassador admits that oil revenues are not going to "the Angolan people." Ordinary Angolans know they're being ripped off by their leaders. They're seething with resentment. In the Angolan enclave of Cabinda, this discontent has fuelled a separatist movement which has been fighting for years. With more and more Angolans asking awkward questions, there's a risk the country will collapse into anarchy again if the corruption problem isn't addressed.

Angola's Lifeline to Portugal

(www.abndigital.com) Angola has committed itself to helping former colonial power Portugal cope with the Eurozone-wide economic crisis. Joining ABN's Lerato Mbele now on the line from Lisbon in Portugal to discuss whether this is capital flight or a bold strategic move by Angola is Pedro Seabra, Researcher at the Portuguese International Relations and Security.

Angola - 2 vs 1 - Burkina Faso ● MrKorein

Manucho's strike earned Angola victory over Burkina Faso in their Group B opener at the Africa Cup of Nations. After an uneventful first period, Angola took the lead when Mateus took advantage of poor defending to slam a shot in the bottom corner. Alain Traore then equalised with a curling free-kick from 25 yards. But former Manchester United striker Manucho nipped in to dispossess the Burkina Faso defence and smashed a left-footed shot in from 20 yards. The goal from the 28-year-old, who also had a loan spell at Hull City, puts the Palancas Negras top of Group B after Ivory Coast beat Sudan 1-0 earlier on Sunday. Burkina Faso only had their place in the tournament confirmed on 10 January after claims from Namibia that they fielded an ineligible player in qualifying. Yet despite the defeat they will be content that they have at least scored, having failed to do so in four of their last five tournaments. They will be less than pleased with the defending by Bakary Kone in the build-up to Mateus's opener when the Burkinabe defender decided to juggle the ball in his own box after a cross from the left, before losing it. The Angolan latched onto the Lyon player's poor clearance, cut inside from the right and buried the ball in the far corner on 48 minutes. Burkina's keeper Daouda Diakite was perhaps at fault 11 minutes later, when Auxerre forward Traore struck a superb set-piece ball into the same side of the goal where he was standing. But that was soon forgotten when Manucho ...

Angolans invest in Portugal's sinking banks

Once Angola was an impoverished part of the Portuguese empire, now its oil wealth means its citizens are queuing to buy everything from vineyards to property in the former colonial power. There are many Africans in Lisbon, often coming from other former colonies, but the ones with serious money to spend are the ones from Angola. Next to the Russians and Chinese, they are the favourite clients of the luxury goods stores. Portugals banks, many in difficulty, have also become prime targets for Angolan investors. The growth in economic ties between Portugal and Angola works both ways. Angola is now one of the largest destinations for Portuguese exports, and thousands of Portuguese are emigrating to Angola every month to look for work. Al Jazeera's Barnaby Philips reports from Lisbon, Portugal.

Capoeira Angola, Rio de Janeiro.

www.marromcapoeira.com Capoeira Angola is the traditional style of Capoeira. It is usually, although not always, characterized by playful, ritualized games, which combine elements of dancing, combat, and music, while stressing interaction between the two players and the musicians and observers. Capoeira Angola contains rituals known as chamadas which translates literally to English as calls. This can be related to the idea of call and response that permeates the music of Capoeira and other African-derived musics such as samba de roda, jazz and blues. Chamadas (or calls) are initiated by one player signalling with a consistent ritual, such as holding one hand up, or holding both hands down near the feet while crouching over with the feet together and looking at the other player. These sequences of movements are done within the capoeira game and have strategic significance such as trying to change the pace of the game, or to indicate the dominance of one player over the other. However, like all things in Capoeira Angola, the sequences can be broken at any time if either person sense the opponent is open or vulnerable and they wish to take advantage of this opportunity. There are many chamadas, and some people rightly claim that every movement in Capoeira Angola is a chamada - that is, a call requiring a response. Due to the difficulty of explaining Capoeira Angola play in words, it is recommended that interested persons view some of the videos which have been linked to www ...
