With outstanding performances and revealing interviews Before the Music Dies takes a critical look at the homogenization of popular music with commentary by some of the industry's biggest talents like Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews, Elvis Costello, Erykah Badu, Branford Marsalis, Bonnie Raitt and more. Using historic footage the film looks at the evolution of American music and the artists who created it and pulls back the curtain (in a very creative way) to expose the sad truth behind today's "artificial" music stars. "The reality is that superficiality is in," says Marsalis. "And depth and quality is kind of out." Inspired by the death of his brother, director Andrew Shapter and his crew traveled thousands of miles, visiting dozens of cities, speaking with hundreds of fans, journalists, record executives and musicians while searching for "real" American music. Enrico Caruso sings 'Crucifixus' from Gioacchino Rossini's 'Messe Solennelle' for Victor Records at Trinity Church in Camden, New Jersey on September 16, 1920. This recording is the very last recording Caruso made in his life. He died 10 months later, on August 2nd, 1921, at the age of 48. From Rossini's score: "crucifixus crucifixus etiam pro nobis etiam pro nobis sub Pontio Pilato sub Pontio Pilato passus passus et sepultus est passus passus et sepultus est" A hearty thank you to Director/Photographer Andrew Shapter for inviting me to take part in this small project as second cameraman. "Bluefield"
Inspired by and based on the photographs of Andrew T., Exithacan, Latrial, Mike Quick, Seth Gaines, Terrapin Dawg -- and in honor of Bluefield's appearance in Andrew Shapter's new film, "Happiness Is" (www.happinessisthemovie.com) -- I offer a burst of creative energy in the form of a short digital story, and want to offer the beautiful city of Bluefield, West Virginia a kind 'hello' and a firm hand-shake. Known as "Nature's Air-Conditioned City," I dream of Bluefield almost daily (it doesn't hurt that we've had more 100 degree plus days in recent, or even distant, history in Austin). Kindest regards to Frances and Mark: You honor your city so finely in the upcoming film release! The musical composition is one of mine, and that's me playing, too. The tune didn't have a name until Andrew Shapter took a listen and told me it made him think of Bluefield. It was a tune in search of a name and a home. Finally, I think it has found both!
