On Friday I did something I've never done before: caught all four trains that pass through Amherst on a weekday. It was an awesome 5 and a half hours with lots of hornshows and Doppler. Skyman2002 was with me for 611 South. Be sure to look at the photos at the end. This was filmed at Cushman in North Amherst, MA 1st train: Amtrak 55, the MF southbound Vermonter service from St. Albans, VT - Washington DC flies south with AMTK P42DC #193 leading and AMTK P42DC #103 trailing. 2nd train: NECR 611, the M-Sa northbound turn job from Palmer, MA - Brattleboro, VT flies north with NECR GP38 #3847, CSOR B39-8E #8530, & NYSW SD70M #4052 leading. 3rd train: NECR 611, the M-Sa southbound turn job from Brattleboro, VT - Palmer, MA flies south with NYSW SD70M #4052, CSOR B39-8E #8530, & NECR GP38 #3848 leading. 4th train: Amtrak 56, the MF northbound Vermonter service from Washington DC - St. Albans, VT flies north with AMTK P42DC #90 leading and AMTK P42DC #179 trailing. Muggle Quidditch Match At Amherst College

Friday, March 28th, 2008 On Friday, Amherst College took its first step into a new world of sports -- one that had everything *but* flying brooms. Amherst hosted Middlebury College in an earthbound version of Quidditch, the sport made famous by the wizards in the Harry Potter books and movies. A fair-sized crowd came out on a raw, rainy morning at the college quad to support the two teams as they played a modified Muggle version of the game. Amherst, in purple and white capes, and Middlebury, wearing dark blue, played the game carrying broomsticks between their legs to remain true to the series. Quidditch, which contains elements of dodgeball, soccer, and basketball is played with four balls, with two of these used for scoring and the other two to be avoided. The goal is to score points by throwing the ball, called the Quaffle, through one of the opponents three goal hoops, all while dodging balls and running with broomsticks. The players who were drenched in rain, and some soaked in mud, played to a well received gathering, amidst the sounds of a joking announcer. Middlebury, which may be home to the nation's first college Quidditch team, held Quidditch World Cup festivals in 2006 and 2007. With a little more experience, they won the match -- but cast a spell on everyone who played and watched.

Does anyone else know a place in Hampshire county where you can pick blueberries in the middle of June? Very strange to be picking blueberries when the laurels are in full bloom. I set a new personal record for tick-having that day too: twenty nine! Can you beat that? I should do one of those contest things. I've been working to develop a bajo sexto technique for accompanying these kinds of songs for the past five years or so, and am getting to be pretty happy with the results. Recently I've been writing more songs on it than playing old ones. Maybe I'll make another record of my own songs one of these days. Kind of like that guy, what's his name- the one with the guitar.
