The United States of America is one of the wealthiest nations on the planet with many opportunities for its citizens. In 2004 alone, Americans spent $12.4 billion (yes, billion!) on cosmetic surgery. With such an abundance of wealth, why are Americans so discontent? Consuming almost 40000 media messages a year, young Americans are told that unless you look like a supermodel or a rock star, you're not good enough for anyone to love. In AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL, filmmaker Darryl Roberts goes on a 5 year journey and illustrates how these increasingly unattainable images contribute greatly to the rise in low self-esteem, body dismorphia, and eating disorders for young women and girls who also happen to be the beauty industry's largest consumers. With appearances by Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson, and Anthony Kiedis, the film reveals that too much television and easy access to plastic surgery are conventional answers, but they do not fully explain this national psychosis. The concerts showcase the band's full complement of brass, woodwinds, percussion, flags and feature twirlers. America's Obsession: A Documentary
We made this documentary as part of our English midterm junior year. We had to identify a social injustice and call people to action. We took a different approach from our classmates and explored society's perception of beauty and its effect on the people of that society. From statistics, to interviews, to a group discussion with teenage girls, there is no doubt that this warped perception of beauty is spreading. However, every single person has the power to decide for themselves what beauty means to them and embrace true beauty in their lives. The Split Rock Lighthouse, a brick octagonal tower standing on a cliff overlooking Lake Superior, has always been considered one of the most beautiful Lighthouses on the Great Lakes. Split Rock attracts tourists from all over the country, and it might be the most visited and photographed in the business. Now in a new documentary, Southport Video Productions explores the history behind this fabled structure, from its establishment in 1910 to present time. Southport Video Productions, makers of the recent LIGHTHOUSES OF LAKE MICHIGAN and LIGHTHOUSES OF LAKE SUPERIOR, decided to focus on a single lighthouse because of the opportunities it afforded for in-depth coverage. "Split Rock is an unbelievable lighthouse," says Southport's producer Mark C. Gumbinger, who fell in love with the towering structure while working on his Lake Superior lighthouse documentary. "It's really a classic," he states, "the kind of building you picture in your mind whenever the word "lighthouse" is mentioned. It's isolated on this cliff, and it looks like a guard standing watch.
