Alley Cat
Alley Cat by Bent Fabric. One of my favorite songs from the 1960's. This won the Grammy Award for Best Rock & Roll Recording, 1962. Bent Fabric is a man, not a group. His real name is Bent Fabricus-Bjerre, and he wrote this under the pseudonym "Frank Bjorn." Fabric is a piano player from Denmark. The Danish title of this is "Omkring et Flygel," which means "Around the Piano." This was the theme song of popular Danish TV show of same name, hosted by Fabric. Farbic led a jazz band in the 1940's. He became head of Denmark's Metronome Records in 1950, making the transition to pop music about the same time. (thanks, Brad Wind - Miami, FL, for all above) An instrumental, this used to be very popular at weddings. It has a goofy dance that speeds up with the music. A later vocal version features lyrics by Jack Harlen.

Alley Cat
Alley Cat is a computer game created by Bill Williams and released by Synapse Software for the Atari 8-bit family in 1983, and for the PC in 1984. The player controls an alley cat whose object is to perform certain tasks within the homes of people, ultimately causing mischief and finding female cats to romance. It was developed and published by Synapse Software. IBM published the PC version. In the main screen, which is the alley, the player is presented with a tall fence in front of an apartment building with several windows. Each window periodically opens to throw out random objects (a phone, shoe, etc.) Every once in a while a dog may come running along the bottom edge of the screen. If the cat touches this dog, they get into a fight and one life is taken away. By jumping and climbing trash cans, the fence, and clotheslines, the cat can enter various rooms through the open windows. Each room contains one of several challenges: * In one room there's a table with a birdcage on it in the middle of the room. Here the object is to push the birdcage off the table and then catch the bird which escapes from the broken cage. * In another room, there's an fishbowl which the cat can enter and must eat all the fish while dodging electric eels and repeatedly coming up for air to avoid drowning. * Yet another room contains a huge chunk of cheese with a number of holes. The lovely folks at the Workers opened up their laneway entrance to supply power to Sam's keyboard. Posed between the pub and the parked cars, the two delighted us with possibly one of our favourite sessions to date, a fortunate combination of an elegantly executed song with environmental blessings such as perfectly timed gusts of wind. We were even lucky to have a coy father-of-the-crew who unwittingly arranged himself centre shot, supplying a new meaning to the song's recurring line, "am I caught in the background or part of the scene?"
